Short version:
Though we have never seen it in person my FI and I really like this ring setting. Unfortunately I have only found it at one e-tailer and it is expensive. Secondly, the matching band is also expensive which will cut into the budget for the diamond.

1) I would really like to be able to shop around (price) for this setting from AT LEAST one other source, preferably more than two of course. I hate not having competition. Plus, that pretty much leaves me "stuck" purchasing the stone from this vendor, i.e. less competition for the diamond !!!!

2) If we forgo the matching band with something less expensive... what would look good along with it? I am afraid a simple band might look terrible alongside it.
She seems to think this would look good but I am not so sure.

Full Background
My FI is Vietnamese. They don''t just get a ring... they get a whole jewelry set!!! (Ring, earrings, necklace, bracelet.) We have budgeted $10K for the set. She likes the ring setting so much that she wants to give up the bracelet for it. She only likes bangles so with her small wrist we would have to go custom made anyway. Her ring size is 3.5 btw so a .75 ct diamond is large enough for her finger.
We are looking at $800-1000 for .75tcw stud earrings (cut down from 1tcw to get the ring) and a solitaire pendant $200-300 plus the stone. I think this stone would need to be at least .8 ct to not look too small - am I right?
I have figured out that what matters most in the diamonds is the quality of the cut (we are looking for RB) and light performance. I think we could get away with J, Si1 if they were "Ideal/Ex H&A" level.

Any thoughts, suggestion, offers whatever are greatly appreciated. I say this after reading a ton of threads here.
thanks in advance!!!!

Hi o,

I'll see if I can help you some. Firstly, there are many vendors who will set one of there stones in a setting they didn't sell you, so for a small setting fee, it would be possible to send the setting from UD somewhere else. (to help with more stone choices)

Here's a full set by Precision Set (I would think you can substitue a round), Goodoldgold carries this line, it's just not listed on their website. My guess is though, it would be more than the UD set, but I could be wrong!

I'm not sure how much cheaper you could get the set or one like it somewhere ele. One other thought is having it custom made. Sometimes that is actually less than buying already made. Here's a place that does some lovely custom work. They previously were partnered with another company, and then left to start out on their own. So while they are still in the process of getting their site up, they are definitely quite experienced in what they do. You could always call and get a quote, never know...

As far as going with a different wedding band, I don't think a plain one would look horrible! There are lots of styles, even within plain bands, I think you could find something suitable.

For the size of the necklace, I think a .70-.80 would be a great size, but it's really a personal choice. Many have them smaller. If you stay with a great cut, you can go slightly smaller and still have a real sparkler that gets attention.

And I think you're in a nice range on color and clarity to help you save with the ering, if she is ok with those.

HTH!

Hi Outatouch,

If you are currently working with one of our G.G.''s or Diamond Consultants, do let them know that you''re working within a budget for the settings as well as the center diamond. Also, feel free to contact me directly if you still need further assistance and I will see if there is something that I can help you with.

With regard to the burnished set band that your fiancée found on a different site, please keep in mind that band is rounded on the outside, whereas the engagement ring you are looking at is flat with edges all the way around.

Thank you for the post and hopefuly we''ll be able to help you.

Here is one that is over $750 cheaper for the set. I dont know anything about their quality but you could ask around.
Its a little lighter on the tcw but definitly the same look.

BTW- if your GF is small I think you could go smaller on the pendant (.6 - .7). We have seen lots smaller here
(like .5). What size does she think she need? That would be important.

Thanks so much for the tip on Precision Set!!! From your link were able to locate one at a local B&M chain. Won’t buy it there of course – at those prices I don’t see how anyone else would either!!! I think I’ll send GOG an email to see what they say. Most importantly, we were able to confirm that we like that style after finally getting to see it IRL.

She also tried on 0.75tcw studs and a 0.75ct solitaire pendant which look great on her. Fortunately she is very petite so they don’t look small on her at all.

I have not contacted anyone at UD yet (I just sent you an e-mail).
I pointed out the flat v. rounded issue with the bands and she agreed we need to rethink that. I believe we are going to try to “make every dollar count” so we can get the set even if it means dropping down to J Si1 ranges – if we do better then great. We do however want to stick with the highest quality in cut and light performance for the ring and pendant stones.

Thanks for the link – it had a really cool video of the set which gave us a better look at the style.
On the pendant, we lucked up today and found a B&M with a lot of solitaire pendants she was able to try on for size. A 0.75ct was right on the money

Yay! I''m so glad you got to see the set in person, and it sounds like a very fruitful outing! Please let us know what you end up with, I love the sets you''re looking at. And you''re very welcome.
