Hello!! I am very close to purchasing a 1.25 carat, round cut diamond for my engagement ring. I cannot see the actual diamond prior
to purchase online - all I have to go on is the GIA grade report. The report states that diamond is an ideal cut, G color, with VS1 clarity. I know that typically VS1 inclusions are minor & not visible to the naked eye, but here is my hesitation: I have been browsing for a while and this diamond's clarity map shows the longest needle I've ever come across on a VS1 report. Am I overreacting? I just want an "eye clean" stone without any durability issues. The price is fantastic for a stone with these ratings, so I'm hoping the deal is not too good to be true! I've attached an image of the clarity map. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!image_709.jpg

Way not a big deal.

For one thing it's GIA who graded it.
Second, it's VS1.
Third, the needle is mentioned last, which means it's the least-serious of the four inclusions.

The reason I'd reject it is the cut could be better.
Anyone can call anything an 'ideal' cut.
It only gets a 2.6 on the HCA: https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

Compare it to this chart.

They're not drawn to scale - it is totally the order that counts most. The least significant inclusion in a GIA VS1? You'll never even know it's there.

If it was a big deal the diamond would not be a VS1. Or even a VS2.

You are safe.

Concentrate on cut.

Kenny, under 3 is okay on the HCA, provided she can get an idealscope. The stone could still be perfectly lovely.

The plotting diagram is a map, not an illustration. The point is to help identify the stone in the future and to help the reader understand why they gave it the grade they did. It's not meant to be drawn to scale. I absolutely agree with the above, if you're concern is about 'eye clean', you'll be fine.

Thank you everyone for your responses and reassurance! I will definitely stop stressing over the clarity maps.

Kenny- I've never seen the HCA page before, what a great tool!! Even though the diamond I am looking at is only a 2.6, at $8,000 I think it's still a great purchase for a 1.25 carat G VS1.

I did find an $8,000 1.15 carat F VS2 that scores a 1.5 on the HCA tool. Would this be a better value? Here's the report:image_711.jpg

Also, if it's the inclusion on the pavilion your concerned about, I'd bet that's a feather, not a needle. Needles are typically only plotted on the pavilion on VVS clarities.

That being said, a VS1 stone is going too be eye clean.

I think the feather is on the top view near the top left, it looks more straight
than the larger line which I think is the feather, although the inclusions are listed as
most important first, the depth of inclusions also matter and the feather although
long may be very slight in depth.
