Hello all,

So I've recently started the daunting search for an engagement ring. I'm a somewhat reformed tomboy, and unlike most women my age, I haven't been looking/researching/fawning over rings all my life, so I'm looking for a bit of help.

I believe I've found the setting, I'm looking for something elegant and simple, without being plain, so I've decided on this Beverley K;

http://www.greenwichjewelers.com/shop/designers/beverley-k/products/beverley-k-split-shank-knife-edge-engagement-ring

My only issue now is the diamond. I'm exceptionally tiny (4'9") with a ring size of 3.75. I'm looking for a cushion cut, but because of my small finger and stature, believe I'd like to keep it in the 0.6-0.9 range.

My issue is I'm in northern Canada, and can't see the ring in person. Any insight/advice/opinions on how I should proceed? Do you think the setting will overpower a tiny diamond? Will it the setting look out of place on a small hand?

Any advice on diamond size/proportion would be so greatly appreciated. I'm really not great at this, and feeling slightly overwhelmed.

Thanks in advance!

Where you aware a cushion will look smaller than a round will? Did you decide a .6-.9 ctw with that fact in mind?

Lots of people shop for rings in the US and have them shipped. unfortunately there are taxes, but if you shop from a place that provides lots of info like pics and whatnot, it can be done without going in and seeing it in person. I mean, most people here bought their ring online without going into the store and picking it out.

Whats your budget?

I do love that setting, but i agree a split shank like that does seem mist attractive on a larger diamond, as the split, to me, needs to be a certain width apart. I have seen split shanks on a small hand, but i agree a thin band bight be most flattering

What did you like about that ring? other than the simplicity. Do you specifically want a split shank? Pave? diamonds in the basket?

That's a beautiful setting!

I would suggest contacting Good Old Gold. They carry Beverly K settings. They also have a lot of cushions of various styles, and all the light performance information you'd ever need on each stone, and they'll make videos for you. (Do not compromise on cut quality - it's what makes the diamond sparkle!)

Start by going to GOG's website and look at the various styles of cushions (August Vintage, traditional modern cushions, Brellia square cushions, etc) and see what style of stone appeals to your eye.

What I will say is that an antique style cushion will look beautiful in that setting! Good Old Gold sells both newly cut antique cushions and Beverley K settings. I don't know what your budget is, but here are some potential stones:

And if you want to see some of them set in rings, here is a thread:

Thanks! And sorry for the double post.

I really like the uniqueness of the setting. The diamonds in the basket I could take/leave, as long as there was some form of detailing in their place. I wasn't specifically looking for a split shank, but I also had no idea what I was looking for. I've tried on plain solitaires and simple bands thinking they'd be my style, and found them too boring on my hand. I live in a town thats essentially vomiting run-of-the-mill tacori, and I'm looking for something with some extra interest, but not the tacori level of over the top (IMO - Sorry to all the tacori lovers out there).

When I was trying on rings, most of the samples came in the 1.0 carat size, which overwhelmed my finger and made me feel uncomfortable, which is why I'd prefer the 0.6-0.9 range. But I agree, the stone should be proportionate to the setting, and since I can't see the setting in person, I'm hoping I can get as much input as possible. I do realize that the cushion will be smaller in appearance, which is fine based on my tiny stature and proportions, as long as the setting won't overwhelm that size of a stone, which is what I'm having the most trouble with! I have no idea of the proportions of the band/setting are, which also isn't helping, I'm hoping to find out when I speak to my jeweller early next week.

Thanks for all the help and replies!

As an add on, I'd like to keep it in the 5500 range, I'm just not comfortable having something worth more than that on my finger, as I'm not much of a jewellery wearer as is. Also I plan on having the setting done in rose gold, so I'd actually prefer the stone a bit softer in colour (the H,I,J,K range is preferred, I'm sure that seems strange to some..)

I dont want to try and dissuade you from this ring because i do think its lovely... BUT, based off your description of yourself and what you want in a ring, have you ever looked at sholdt rings? They are minimal without being boring

heres a thread of them

if you did go that route, Brian gavin sells some pretty nice modern cushions
this one doesnt have a pic yet but if you look around at their stones you can see they are cool if you like a modern cut. And they sell that brand.

but anywho sorry im not trying to push you on one thing or another, i think that ring is very pretty, but i do have the same concerns as you do about side.

I also get wanting something simpler than Tacori.... I can appreciate it, but as someone who was also never a girly girl, its too ornate for everyday where, and just not me. And sounds like it is for you too.

You havent mentioned a budget, do you have one?

OH! looks like we posted at the same time, if you like stones in that range (I do too! my stones are k's) this would be cute

I like the .72 ct link that Niel posted. Maybe BGD could send you some more photos of it since you're so far away? Doesn't hurt to ask. I'd bet a .70-.80ct would be perfect for your finger size if you're uncomfortable with a 1ct.

The Beverly K setting will be made in proportion to the stone shape and size. I am not really a proponent of spending more on the setting than the diamond, though. I think a lower color in an antique style cushion would make more sense if you have to reduce the price of the stone. I don't see a modern cushion working as well in an antique style setting, either.

Well sholt does make some B-E-A-uuutiful rings, it's not really the style I'm going for. I like the timeless, antique-ie look, and the more modern bezel and semi-bezels looked absolutely horrid on my finger. I also liked the knife edge on the original beverley K, because the straight eternity style looking bands had just a bit to much flash for me, and by offsetting it a touch with the knife, it seemed a bit less flashy.

Ohh the daunting reality that is engagement ring shopping. If I may ask, being the non-diamond/girly girl, what is the difference between a modern and antique cushion cut?

Thanks diamond seeker,

I'm actually looking for a warmer diamond (H,I,J,K) range, as I'd like the setting in rose gold (based on my skin tone) so I can compromise a bit on price based on the colour, but I'm not willing to compromise on cut or clarity. Its also good to know they make the ring to suit the stone, because it will have to be a custom order (based on the small size) I think it should work out fine.

How about this one if you are after an Antique looking cushion;

Alternatively if you love vintage settings have you looked at genuine Vintage Diamonds from places like JBEG?

Or an Antique round something like this would look very cool in Rose Gold;

Or this one is on sale if you do decide to go for a bigger stone (ask Diamondseeker how quickly you can get used to a bigger stone) and with the sale it's in budget with a setting;

Understandable. I just think when I think the opposite of "girly" I think sholdt. But ignore me. :D Modern cushions are the ones I'd bet you'd been looking at in stores. More facets. The antique kind are the ones with large and fewer facets. Like those AVCs everyone is posting for you... those often come in lower colors, and I think would look beautiful in an antique style rose gold setting. That'll be very beautiful. I'm still have questions about the size with the split shank. I'd ask good old gold and see if they have an example of that setting with a smaller stone.

Thanks,

I'll get in touch with good old gold asap. I haven't had much contact with the jeweller I was planning on using due to conflicting schedules, so I'll call and see if maybe they're a better option. I love the look of the antique cushiom far better than the more modern. Thanks for all the beautiful stone options. I think as long as the proportions work, I'll be going with a .75-.85. Will keep everyone informed on the progress. Thanks so much for all the advice!
