E ring diamond to a stud earring??

I am in the market for diamonds studs. I was thinking of 2 ct. weight. Or just shy like 1.8. I had this size fakes and it was good on my ear.
Next year is my 15 year anniversary and I am upgrading my E ring. It’s a 1.3 round H VS2. I got to thinking - will I take a huge loss on this when I upgrade? Then I thought maybe I should keep it and try to match to another and make it into the studs? Is that crazy? I would end up with 2.60 studs and keep the original E ring stone. OR should I just get studs and trade my ring in later?

Right I feel less “bad” about selling my E ring stone. Plus I know he probably overpaid and I won’t see half of that when I sell to upgrade. I was more wondering how hard it would be match for a pair of studs ....

I think it ultimately depends on how attached you are to your engagement ring. I have friends and family that have upgraded by trading and others that turn their engagement ring into a pendant necklace and then buy a completely new with no trade. That diamond in my eyes is very good quality for an earring. You might get more for your money with slightly lesser quality and not lose so much on the trade by keeping your engagement stone and turn it into a necklace or something if you're attached and buy earrings or match another stone to make an earring set.

I do feel like it’s easier to buy a “matched pair”. But on the other hand, it depends on how fussy you are - I personally don’t have good enough eyes to see differences in stones unless they’re hopelessly, terribly mismatched in size and color. I haven’t ever noticed differences in facet pattern, but jewelry is more about the “feel” for me anyway.

If you want to avoid the issue, the other poster’s suggestion to turn it into a pendant (or maybe a right hand ring) would eliminate that issue!

I am not attached to the stone. I know that sounds “awful” but I am not. My husband, yes! I have a pendant that was the stone my Dad gave my Mom - I am more sentimental about that! Anyway - it also makes me spend “more” on a bigger stone to match the one I have for studs. Seems easier to just buy studs and then trade later or sell for the new E ring... just wondered if anyone ever did this. I would keep for one of my sons to give one day but then who know if they would want that etc.

I would turn the ER into diamond studs and buy a new diamond for the ER (maybe an ACA from Whiteflash so you can use their generous upgrade policy in the future). The size would make for amazing studs with a lot of presence! I'm too sentimental to part ways with my ER!

I did that. My ering was a 1.1 carat, F, very good cut, way before super ideals were a thing. I bought a stone matching in size and color (close enough) and made studs. It didn't matter that the ering was not super ideal. It was super white and on my ears, no one could tell the difference. Wore them straight for 4 years.

I did exactly what you are considering (see link below) and am so glad I did. I didn’t realize how sentimental I was about my original e-ring until we decided to upgrade, so rather than trade it or sell it, I bought a match for studs that I wear daily It really depends on how attached you are to it, if you are eligible for an upgrade through the retailer you initially purchased from, and if not, how much you’d get in trade or by selling it. Another thing to consider is if you’ll be comfortable wearing 2.6 ctw studs. Personally, I would have no problem rocking that size . GLD!
