I have a couple of ducks that are insisting on swimming in my pool. It’s been a week. We scare them away, but they are back in a couple of hours. Do you have any tips for getting rid of them? I don’t appreciate duck shit and am wondering if they pose any other health/unsanitary threats risks?

Get a big dog

We used to get the occasional duck, when we had a pool. Our dog always knew before we did and would go berserk, barking at the window or patio door, and chase it away. If was lucky, I would get to the window in time to see it fly away.

Maybe the pool store would have a suggestion of something that would make your pool look less appealing to the ducks?

Do you have a pool cover?

Awwww! But they think it's a pond!
Photos?

Be thankful you don't have deer swimming around....

I've read an automatic pool cleaner is a good deterrent since it constantly moves like a predator.

Sorry for the treadjack Nala, but is there a thread on your beautiful avatar Alexiszoe???

LOL, no, there's no thread on this! I am just a bit shy talking too much about my bling these days, since Mr Alexiszoe is security conscious about the stuff I post online.

Ummm. No apologies. Agreed. Must. See. Thread.

We don’t have the backyard for a big dog! Thinking of borrowing one! Lol. But hubby thinks his mom’s lab might hurt them!

They are so brazen! Or maybe they wanted to ask for permission first. They came to our front door this morning before they jumped in our pool. Lol.

Lol. Here you see them ignoring my little dog!

Awwww. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this Nala but I think you know what I’d do. Let them enjoy and I’d just go to another pool or beach or if it was ok health wise I’d swim with them haha.

Beautiful pool!

OMG Nala I am of no help because the ducks look so cute and so does your doggie and the fact that they completely ignore him is even cuter!

Sorry Nala :D

But all kidding aside, I do hope you find a way to encourage them to go elsewhere...I could understand not wanting poop everywhere. Someone mentioned a pool cover...maybe there are some that are very quick and easy to take on and off?

Run out and do a quick cannon-ball in the pool, or maybe just keep a couple of tennis balls by the door to toss out in the pool (not at the ducks) when you happen to see them in there?

I’m sorry, but that pic of your dog (who appears to be barking or howling) and the ducks just floating around not giving a darn is kind of funny! :mrgreen2:

Cute!!!! You could try an owl or alligator decoy.

Theyre so cute!!!

I have zero advice on how to rid of them, but wanted to add: figure it out soon! If they have ducklings, it'll be harder to care for. My ex's house had visiting ducks and their ducklings wouldn't be able to jump out of the pool due to the pool's edge lip I see you also have. They ALL drowned the first year. Finding deceased ducklings in your pool is super sad.

Okay, my very first thought was this was how The Sopranos started, with ducks in Tony's pool. I digress. I'm wondering if just having inflatables in the pool would help? I know ducks and geese are very messy, but dang, they're cute.

I like Lyra's suggestion of inflatables and along those lines how about getting a plastic replica of one of their natural predators and putting it in your pool?
Snakes are natural duck predators and I bet you can easily find a floating snake to put in your pool. I don't know if it would work but worth a try maybe.

I’m dealing with ducks on a daily basis too this year, at least 6 times a day every day. It’s mating season and they’re very persistent. Luckily I have a dog who will chase the ducks away, but they come back so frequently even she isn’t up for the challenge by the umpteenth time. They don’t mind swimming with inflatables, they just stay on the opposite side. I keep tennis balls by the door and toss them if I can get the door open quietly, but this has been going on for a couple weeks now and the ducks have learned to get out of the pool as soon as they hear the door open. They try to hide in the plants until the coast is clear.

I took this photo about an hour ago...they heard me coming.

Omg! You feel my pain!

Oh, I sure do! This is the first time since we moved in 4 years ago that we’ve had so many water foul visitors. We also get heron and egrets, but they don’t go into the pool, thank goodness. My neighbors are having the same problem...not sure why there seem to be so many ducks in our back yards this year. Nala, are you also in southern California?

Yes I am!

HI:

I am jealous. You have year round weather for an outdoor pool.

Sorry....no help.:mrgreen2:

cheers--Sharon

We get ducks in our pool too. I just let my two little doxies out and they are gone right away. They don't leave the neighborhood though. Last year, one of a pair got hit by a car and died. I like to see them but I don't want them to get comfy in my pool either.

Or a bear! I remember seeing video of that, when we lived in SoCal.

This would keep ME out of the pool.

My friend had a big problem with pigeons in his pool (they liked to bathe in his spa :knockout:).

He purchased these dolphins that float around the pool and are kind of like those "sock 'em, bop 'em" clowns that you hit and they pop back up. They just move about the pool/spa freely but stay up and scare away the pigeons. Maybe they would work for the ducks too?

Here's the best place to find the quality ones (the Amazon option is a cheap knockoff).

Good luck!

I vote for putting blow up people in the pool .
