I am down to (2) choices for a "light carat" round brilliant with either AGS Ideal or GIA Excellent (with right proportions). The diamond will be for an engagement ring.

I ordered the following from BN (and have in my posession) for $5259.67:
GIA 0.92 G VS2, Cut-Ex, Pol-Ex, Sym-Ex, flour-faint
Tbl-57%, Dep-62%, Crn-35deg, Pav-40.8deg, Cul-none, (HCA 1.7)

The local B&M where I am buying the setting is offering ($4993):
AGS 0.916 H VS1, AGS Ideal "triple 0''s", flour-inert
Tbl-56%, Dep-61.4%, Crn-34.9deg, Pav-41.2deg, Cul-pointed (HCA 3.5)

Considerations:
If I go with B&M I have to pay return shipping on BN order.
The setting will be white gold, perhaps the G will look nicer than the H.
All things being equal, I would prefer a better color than a VS1 vs. a VS2.

If anyone has any opinions, suggestion, or advice I would greatly appreciate it.

My choice would be the one with an HCA Of 1.7, hands down!

I agree if it''s down to those two, the BN one!! I mean have you compared the two in natural light next to each other? If the B&M store one is like really singing to you, then it all comes down to personal preference =)

But obviously based on the numbers, the first one.

I have compared the two in natural light, to my eyes no major differences. I agree, the numbers do speak for themselves. Another thing, the AGS report has all ideal scores, but it is from October of 2000. Did AGS do Cut, Polish, Symmetry, and Proportions grading back then? I thought that was a more recent thing, possibly just my imagination.

My next issue is the setting I really really like the following WG setting from WF:

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Diamond-Settings/-Tiffany-Style--Bead-Set-Solitaire_953.htm

The setting at the local B&M is similar, with slightly higher shoulders causing a deeper and less wide area for the head. I am a little afraid it will be mounted to high and cause the diamond to look small for a 0.92.

Thanks for your help

I say go for the BN diamond since it scores best on the HCA and is only a smidge more $ in the grand scheme of things. Then send the diamond to WF and get it set in the setting you really love. I definitely would not get a setting that you think will make the diamond look smaller!

Sly, have you asked Whiteflash if they have access to this same stone (i.e., the .92 from Bluenile)? Sometimes vendors can get the same diamonds, and it would definitely be worth inquiring. That way, if you go with the Whiteflash setting, you only have to deal with one vendor. Also, the price *might* be better going through Whiteflash (although I'm just speculating on that point!).

Blue Nile stone. Plus, I will assume you have to pay taxes and the B&M!!

Good Luck

WF will not set a diamond purchased from elsewhere on a stock setting. They will ship the setting for you. See the below from their FAQs

Or easier still, just get the diamond from WF?

If eyeclean, no point paying for a VS. PS discount would be 2 1/2%

We may set a diamond purchased elswehere if it is insured by the owner. The different possibilities can be discussed in person. Cinnamon thank you; we''ve updated the FAQ to reflect this.
