Here's a link to a cool slide show of all the best of breeds at Westminster this year. Every. Single. One. :appl: :appl:

So you can see a picture of your favorite breed, just use the slidey bar thing to select.

They're all TOO CUTE!

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/02/16/sports/20110216-westminster-dog-show-parade.html?hp#/0_46

Just for fun, thought I'd pass it along.

How does your dog compare to the best in breed?

My littlest looks pretty close to it's best of breed, but I think they shaved the back feet of the show dog. Poor little guy.

Dogs are the best people I know.

I have a cat too, BTW, so I'm not dog-centric.

Does anybody have a similar kitty link?

Okay, had to come back with this; check out Ziggy the Puli. It looks EXACTLY like someone laid down a mop head and left.

Don't these dogs have feet?

Seriously, where's his feet?

YES I thought the SAME THING!

Thanks iLander!

These dogs are beautiful. There are some breeds I just plain don't like but even THEY looked good.

I don't have a dog but my favorites (that are listed/shown here) are:

Glen of Imaal terrier
Norwich terrier (although I prefer the Norfolk terrier because of their flopped-over ears.)
Otterhund (I love the face!)
Spinone Italiano

Some breeds just crack me up because their heads look so completely disproportionate to their bodies. A couple examples are:

the Dandie Dimont terrier
PBGV (Petit Bassett Griffon Vendeen)

If I could have any breed of dog besides those I have now, I'd want a blue tick coon hound. They are such cool dogs.

hahaha...I agree!!! Is there a dog in there???

Dragonfly, Sig: I know, right? LOL!

I'm going to spend all day saying "cordmaker rumpus bumpus" just because it sounds cool (this is the Puli's name for anyone that can't make the link work) :D

Direct to Puli: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/02/16/sports/20110216-westminster-dog-show-parade.html?hp#/0_67

Zoe: What about the Schipperki? What kind of mutations do you have to do to get that thing?

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/02/16/sports/20110216-westminster-dog-show-parade.html?hp#/0_78

I love the Glen of Imaal Terrier, so cute! The Dogue de Bordeaux scares me, but I bet he's just a slobbery love bug. Or not . . .

Did you guys see the Chow Chow?

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/02/16/sports/20110216-westminster-dog-show-parade.html?hp#/0_28

Holy Hair, Batman!

The bulldog is SO cute!

I'm having WAY too much fun with this . . .

thanks for posting Ilander! They were cool to look at! Does anyone have any experience with Rhodesian Ridgebacks? I am allergic to dogs and my DH desperately wants one at some point. He really wants a Lab but I know they shed a lot which might not be good for the allergies. Definitely want a kid friendly dog!

edit - the Vizsla is really pretty too!

Those doggies are SO CUTE!

iLander - Dogues de Bordeaux are super sweet, and veeeery slobbery.

lizzyann- One of my neighbors has a rhodesian ridgeback and he is the friendliest dog. He let Hera romp all over him. And she's no delicate flower! HTH!

The pekingese that won the toy group looked like a dust bunny.
I really couldn't even tell there was a dog under all the hair.

I didn't see any funny looking shelter mutts. That's my favorite breed.

There is a sottish deerhound down the street from me who is related to the one that won best in show last night. Amazing animals. My pug Murry doesnt like big dogs (napoleon complex) but he loves the deerhound. (He must think it's a horse) the gentlest and sweetest dog, Im crazy for them, just wish I had a 4000 acre ranch in Big Sur to keep one on. I also love the Jack Russels. My cousin breeds them in Va. There is a blond, no really vanilla color spumoni around the corner from me here and two Borzois in my building! I wish you all could have seen the beagle that came to our building last year to look for bedbugs (we had none). Wow she was amazing. This year I Was more taken with the sporting dogs than the others. German Pointers are catching my eye a lot.

We had a Rhodesian Ridgeback when I was in High School. Simba was such a loving, lovable dog! But then he had severe hip problems and he had to be put down. I was devastated. ;(

In my experience Ridgebacks are very friendly and love children. They do need lots and lots of exercise though. We used to walk ours for 45 minutes a day and we farmed him out to our next door neighbour for daily 8km runs.

Towards the end when he couldn't run anymore he gained loads of weight and that made his hip problems worse. ;( If you are interested in a Ridgeback, I'd suggest that you get one from a reputable breeder who tests for the health issues associated with the breed. I'm not sure how your allergies would cope with a Ridgeback, so perhaps you could consider befriending one at the local dog park to see if you have a reaction?

As for iLander's question about my little doggy, Tika measures up very well. But then she should. If you'll allow me to show off for a moment, she is a former show dog, born of show dogs. Her sire was imported from the UK's Ozmilion line and both her parents campaigned in South Africa and Zimbabwe. So it was no surprise when Tika also did well in the ring, being champion in 2003. Officially she is CH Brolea Serendipity, but we think that is far too big a name for such a little dog!

Without further ado, here she is!

Mine too! I've always liked the slightly odd looking dogs. I volunteer at our local SPCA and I spend all my time playing with the silly looking dogs no one wants to adopt. At the moment we have a Chow/Labrador cross with the cutest purple tongue. He is absolutely adorable. We also have an English Pit Bull/Rottweiler cross that I swear has some Great Dane in him because he is HUGE! My FI and I have been paying his board at the SPCA since December to avoid having him put down. I hope someone kind will see him for the lovable furball that he is and take him home to a huge yard where he can run around to his heart's content.

I wish I could take them all, but I thanks to my allergies I can only have a hypoallergenic dog. :(

OH! Thanks for reminding me Gypsy! I forgot to mention Pet finder!

I am also a big believer in adopting shelter dogs (I am absolutely not a dog snob) and I think I've recommended Pet Finder before. There are 2 ladies that live near me, one fosters Cavalier King Charles and another fosters Japanese Chin. Pet finder also has listings of the mixed breed dogs and cats at your local shelter, as well as bird, hamsters, snakes, bunnies, and turtles! We always get our cats through rescue.

If anyone is looking to adopt, check out the world's greatest pet rescue website:

http://www.petfinder.com/index.html :appl: :appl: :appl:

Sometimes I just browse on the site and wish I could take them ALL home!

Don't you wonder what those dogs would look like if they were shaved?

Awesome post iLander. I was so happy that the Deerhound won Best in Show. She just looked like a sweet dog and was absolutely gorgeous. The Peke made me lol....it looked like a big moving dustball, snort! I love the Westie (that's what I grew up with), but my favorite is definitely the mutt, especially the adopted kind, which is what our Zoe is....ain't she cute???

My uncle had a huge, grey, furry, skinny dog that showed up in his yard in the 70's. This thing was gigantic, and his name was Wookie. I'm now pretty sure it was a purebred deerhound! The thing was definitely a horse in disguise! My uncle is a tough biker dude, and he could handle his shepherd and Wookie, but Wookie eventually tried to kill the shepherd and one of them had to be put down (can't remember which one) from all the dog fight injuries. :? So those deerhounds are not delicate flowers.

I LOVE pugs!!! :appl: Do they really shed as much as people say?

Jack Russels need to be so busy, it's like a mini Border Collie, same intensity. Too much for me to handle!

Thank God on the bedbugs! I didn't know they could use beagles! I cross my fingers every day that no one brings in bedbugs. :( What's that store in Midtown that all the tourists that line up in front of (why? can't they order off the net? What the . . . ?) ? That turned out to have bedbugs? That was funny, in a twisted, dark humor sort of way . . .

There's a lady that has 2 mini pinschers that walks where I walk mine, and I pray every day that she has a good grip! They are fine, until they get within 5 feet of my dogs (usually RIGHT in the middle of the crosswalk) and suddenly all I see is TEETH and snarling. Jeez, they are scary little monsters (yes, I know, not all min pins are like this, these were poorly raised). And this lady is getting older and weaker by the day . . . she just laughs and says something in some language, but I can't hear her over the snarling!

Is your shelter on petfinder? Can you help them do it, if they're not on it? Or if they are on it, can you link to the dog you're so kindly paying the board for? Or maybe a post a pic? Maybe someone on PS has room for him . . .

I thought that Obama's dog was hypoallergenic, the portuguese water dog. Maybe one of those?

Gorgeous! What a stunning dog! Do you use any products to help with the shine on that fabulous coat?

I was actually really excited about the Best of Breed judging at this year's Westminster. There is a gorgeous Landseer named Lance who is well known in the Newf community. He was up against some stiff competition from a couple of beautiful black newfies, but Lance took BoB and I was really happy about it. Black newfs tend to be larger boned and always do better in the ring, so I was happy to see a Landseer take BoB this year...I love landseers (obviously) because I feel they're slightly more high-energy than black newfs, but finding a great landseer breeder is always difficult.

Anyway, here is a snapshot of the BoB judging and a shot of me with Bo when he was only 4 months old. Bo's mother is French and got her championship here in the U.S., Bo's father didn't have his championship when Bo was born, but I saw him in person (at the breeders and in local shows) several times and knew that he would have no issues getting his championship. He did finally earn all of his points last year.

Bo is not destined to be a champion after all...his head is fantastic, his movement is great in both the front and the rear, but his eyes are too loose and his tail is about 2 inches shorter than it needs to be. He grew into these faults when he was about 1 and we gave up showing him soon after. He's still my happy, goofy pup, though!

Hera is not particularly show quality. She has a couple of white toes, and i'm sure one or two other issues. But she has a few champions in her bloodlines and we think she's pretty cute!

Shelter mutts are my favorite breed too!
Found mine on petfinder. :appl:

Oh! The deer hound is just beautiful! She's delightful to look at.

I have a deer hound cross ex-shelter mutt, and she looks like a slightly smaller deer hound. If I ever got another dog, it will be a full bred deer hound, I just love them.

No, we live in South Africa and don't have petfinder here. :( However, we've created a Facebook page for our little town's SPCA and it is regularly updated to show all the new doggies. I think people are frightened off by this dog's size and the (imho, undeserved) Rottweiler and Pit Bull reputations. We really hope that he will find a home because he's the biggest love bug ever! He seems to think he's a lap dog and wants to sit on one's lap and cuddle all the time. He is happiest when his ears are being stroked and even though I know I'll hit out in hives afterwards, I simply can't stop myself.

Thank you for suggesting the Portuguese Water Dog as hypoallergenic. I have a Yorkie (Tika) because she's hypoallergenic and while we love her to bits, it would be nice to get a bigger dog too. One day... :)

Tika only uses Wampum products. They were formulated by a chemical engineering professor here in South Africa especially for her dogs (she shows and breeds Maltese) and when our breeder tested she found that they work really well for Yorkies too. I highly recommend Wampum! http://www.wampummaltese.com/Products/home.html

I was thinking about this - I had no idea these dogs were called Scottish Deer Hounds.
Makes sense. I live in Scotland, so we just call them Deer Hounds. Like in Friends, when Joey told Ross to enjoy his trip to China and eat Chinese food and Chandler said that they just call it 'food' there...

Yaaaay doggies. Blue roan cocker (I believe) and totally hopeless. She has the quaintly named 'slipped mask syndrome' meaning droopy lids (fortunately only a little) and low hung ears. Looks gorgeous to me 'tho!!!

LOVE your doggie! :appl: Of course, mine can walk under his stomach, without bending, because they are so small.
