crown1 just posed the question of whether rose gold lost its color over time in another thread in Jewelry Pieces. I really thought that the topic deserved a thread of its own! The idea frightens me, because I have some lovely, Italian 18K rose gold jewelry that I was hoping would remain beautiful!

crown1 said she she hoped to research the topic. I would like to cull any knowledge that is out there!

It has copper in it and polished copper oxidizes very quickly (like within days or weeks) however I can't say I've ever noticed any dullness in my rose gold jewelry. My oldest piece is 2 or 3 years.

My mother's wedding band is rose gold. It's their 40th wedding anni next month and the ring is still the same color.

Since it has more copper, rose gold may tarnish a bit faster than, say, green gold which has no copper. But, other than that, it is a stable alloy that holds its properties, so there shouldn't be any fading.

Any gold (white, yellow, rose) piece will get a slight patina over time if it isn't pure gold, as the alloys tend to tarnish. However, it should be easily cleaned. There are many rose gold pieces from the mid 20th century that still look as nice as the day they were purchased. A little polishing can do wonders.

Well...as someone who owns and polishes family silver flatware, and who doesn't believe that tarnish is a defect, that sounds good!

I have a rose gold wedding band from my first nanny. She was wed in 1930-es I believe... It is still rose. Has not tarnished at all. Needs some polishing but it is another issue. She was wearing it all her life. I also have a pair of earrings in rose gold setting which were made in 1970-es. Same story. Granted, I did not wear them much.
