Trying to figure out what setting I like better. How much of a difference in size does a high settings (think Tiffany setting) make in comparison to lower set rings where the diamond is held in a lower set basket? Does it really make a noticeable difference for a square stone?
Yes, I think a higher setting makes a stone appear larger - but it''s so easy to hit! I have mine in a low basket setting and I still hit it from time to time
. I also think it depends on the person''s finger whether or not a high setting would look good.

How much of a difference would you say it makes? If say you had a 1.5ct ring... would the diamond look close to 2ct in a high setting?
No, absolutely not. We're talking about a matter of millimeters here. Raising a diamond a couple millimeters is not going to fool anybody into thinking your diamond is half a carat larger -- or even half that.
A lot of factors go into how big your diamond looks. If you have small hands, for example, your diamond will *appear* larger by comparison. If you have a small ring size/thin fingers, your diamond will cover more of the finger and therefore appear larger. These are just a couple factors that go into how other people will perceive the size of your diamond.
If you have large hands and a ring size 9, for example, a 2 carat diamond will not visually have the "oomph" that a 1.5 carat diamond has on small hands with a size 4 finger.
The appearance of size difference in a diamond set up higher is truly nominal. I have a 2.5 carat solitaire RB set in a high setting, but that the setting alone isn't going to make people think it's a full half carat larger.
I don''t think it will necessarily make your diamond look like a significantly bigger size, but it may help it POP some more, therefore giving it the illusion of being bigger. Actually, I have a 1.35 round diamond on a high cathedral setting and I do get asked if it''s two carats. I do have long and skinny fingers, but I''m sure the high setting helps at least a little. Also though, I think the people that ask if it''s two carats are people that really don''t know much about dianmond size, as mine faces up just like a 1.35 should. I can''t say I mind their mistake though!
