Title.

Take for example this gcal certificate for a super ideal cut gcal 8x lab Diamond that was listed in the 2k range:
F6B1D3D3-9D06-482D-9CBF-BFB31A96E95B.jpeg

versus this diamond listed on white flash website showing the actual aset image:
65E5103C-047F-4CF1-BA58-BFBD06479E36.jpeg

are those both aset images or is the gcal image not an actual aset?

is one of these diamonds going to perform significantly better than the other or would it be pretty close?

The GCAL image is not an actual ASET. From GCAL's website:

You can see the quality of the cut by looking at the Optical Symmetry image on your GCAL certificate - the more even the pattern, the better the symmetry. All light returned at the same angles is represented by the same color. For example, red areas represent light being returned within a consistent angle range, green areas represent a different angle range, etc.

I believe the two diamonds would perform similarly.

My hunch is that GCAL's scope is very similar to the ASET, but they probably can't use an actual ASET in a commercial grading lab environment due to infringement of AGS.

We really need Angelo Palmeri to come here and explain.
That image is a complex version with about 5 different light souced.
Working from the top or 90 degree it runs black, green, red, black and finally blue from about 45 degrees to the horizon.
There is a patent somewhere from maybe about the late 1990's to 2000ish, I think from Al Gilbertson, and there was a big kerscuffle and lawsuits with GCAL finally owning the IP.
