Does face-up size affect diamond price?

I was looking at a 1.56 carat diamond that is 9.37 x 6.79 and it is my understanding that this faces up sort of big for a 1.56 (please correct me if I am mistaken). Will this increase the price, versus smaller 1.56s with similar specs, or is the price mostly about the actual carat weight? Thanks!

No, not really, per se. This is a consideration of cut quality. Diamonds are priced considering the cut quality, among other factors. A diamond that is very shallow (depending on shape) may be cut poorly and thus, less expensive per carat than a comparable not cut shallow. Pricing considers many factors. What shape are you looking at?

There is a sweet range of spread versus weight, especially when it comes to round cut diamonds. It is not a perfectly defined set of parameters, but when a diamond is way too small in appearance for weight or way too large in appearance for weight, then the value is lower. Oftentimes, the price being asked ignores this truth, but negotiations are part of buying diamonds, especially ones where the cutting has faults. In order to realize negotiations are called for demands a higher than average level of diamond savvy. You look ignorant if you haggle for no reason or ignorant when you don't if there is good reason to argue about the asking price.

I did a trade B2B search for 1ct X cut rounds and got 723 stones.
I arranged by smallest dimensions - Avg $5,703 176 stones.
By largest $6,259 203 stones
That is a 10% difference.
So yes - it is an important pricing factor

Garry; I wonder if the asking prices of those 10% below the largest down to those 25% below the largest diameter would have a higher asking average than just the largest diameter ones/
It may be that the upper middle range are the more premium cut ExExEx types. Just curious, as always. Any thoughts on this question?

Average Price/Ct.: $6,171 for the next 207 diamonds down to 6.40-6.42mm down to 6.35x6.4mm in diameter

So larger sizes even though some are on GIA's shallowest Excellent gut grade border - were still more expensive. Of course HCA accepts many shallower poportions in GIA's VG range.

Only half as many stones in VG as EX - The biggest 50 were Average Price/Ct.: $5,359 and the smallest 50 were only slightly cheaper Average Price/Ct.: $5,142

Moral of the story - for earrings and pendants kiddies - go for GIA VG with HCA scores under 1.0
