In my circle of friends, most have solitares

I am getting a RHR made similar to the Tiffany soleste as a wedding present from my parents. It will be a yellow cushion with a double halo.

I haven't seen many halos but I can understand why many people love them.

I agree I dismiss them because they are trendy. My age group (50's) no one here wears one. It seems all new engagements have them. Can't wait to see the new trend!
70's-80's- yellow gold
90's - marquise
00's - three stone
10's- halo
Next????

Antique settings and old diamonds IMO.

^^ This! Because what goes around comes around. Just like we are seeing a resurgence in the "old fashioned" baby names, and also a new wave of 80's style clothing. In the 80's I shuddered at bell-bottoms. In the 90's we laughed at legwarmers. In the 00's high-waisted pants were ghastly... All of these things have come back or are coming back. Ring designs will do the same thing. Halos are just a reincarnation of an antique style. They just happened to make a come-back during the new era of Facebook and Pinterest... so EVERYONE is seeing them. We used to not have that kind of visual overload of what everyone else was wearing. Now we see every fashion trend, hairstyle and even meal that a single person will choose on any given day. I wonder if this saturation will cause the "fads" to come and go faster?? It will be interesting to see how social media effects this cycle over the long haul.

I've gotten a bit worn on halos because I've seen so many on PS. That said, I still appreciate a well-made, high quality halo that doesn't detract and instead accentuates the center stone. Like most things, I like the halos that manage to be a bit different than the norm somehow - they have interesting sidestones, a uniquely shaped halo, etc.

In real life - I'm just out of my 20s and got married pretty much last of everyone I know - I live in a medium-big city where there's plenty of folks with money to spend, and I still only know of one person in my circle who has a halo. Most girls I know have solitaires with pave or channel set shanks.

I appreciate everyone's opinions....but I wish more people would vote!

I do! I think halos are a cheaper way to make stones look bigger. People often comment on people's halo rings as being "huge". They make classy 2 ct rings look like 5 ct rings for 1/20th of the price! People that know nothing about jewelry think it's a flashy/expensive ring when it's really a trick of the eye. I think they are trendy. A trend that hopefully dies out.

I only like a delicate halo that is done right. I don't like halos on larger diamonds because I think they look like space ships. I do like a halo with a colored stone because you can focus on the center stone.

I agree. A delicate halo done with the correct proportions can be absolutely breathtaking. But a halo can also go horribly wrong if not done properly. It all comes down to personal taste though!

They've definitely grown on me. When I got engaged 8 years ago, the halo trend was just taking off both on PS and in real life and I didn't like the idea of a halo for an ER at the time. But as they became more popular, the differences in quality and style among them became really apparent. I've seen some really amazing ones and some not so great ones and have really grown to appreciate the former. I reset my stone into a halo a few months ago and absolutely love my new setting.

When I was searching for my setting I went to all the area jewelry stores. The majority of what was in their cases were halo's. I also see many young (20ish) girls with them. Now for me with me 48 yr old hands-I prefer a sleek solitaire or an art deco look. However the halo's on here are amazing! The work of the masters, Victor, Steven k, Leon, ERD, Greenlake, etc those Halo rings are pure beauty. So I guess I don't dismiss them, I admire them but realize it is not a look for me.
I would strongly consider an art deco style halo for a RHR and have saved loads of those settings on my computer. (Next years project :naughty: )

The halos I see on this forum are beautiful and the craftmanship unbelievable. Would love to see these in person. However, I am not a fan of this setting. I would rather have a larger stone than a smaller stone with a halo. IMHO I think that the halo sparkle (if done with nice big diamonds) detracts from the center stone's sparkle. I prefer a classic engagement ring-solitaire with baguettes or solitaire and this bias prevails. Save the bling for a right hand ring. But I am very old fashioned and believe let the main stone speak for itself.

Halos are just so trendy right now that I tend to dismiss them a bit just because it's a trend.

I love a well-crafted halo that really frames a stone nicely, but most of the halos I see on the train are generic and blocky-looking maul settings with matching wedding bands. "How many diamonds can I get on this ring for under 2k? "
They look really over-done for what they are - eg. 2ct tw, but the largest stone present is .45 ct. Some are even those illusion multi-stone settings (Not to my personal taste):knockout: .

It's like they only have a halo ring to keep up with the Joneses, and not for the way it looks :| .

If I saw a realy nice halo it would probably turn my head, but so far....nada.
I completely agree.

A friend of mine has a gorgeous, well-made halo w/an oval center stone, and hers is the only halo I've ever seen IRL that is a showstopper. Of course, I helped her husband pick it out, and he used my jeweler, so I knew it would be beautiful.

Most halos I see IRL are so clunky that I wonder how anyone could really like them. Even a well-made halo isn't my style, but at least I can appreciate it for its beauty.

I so "love" my halo... madly in love with it.. and with my new stack I love it even more.... It looks lovely alone.. or with just my wedders or when I add my sapphire bands... there are so many beautiful halos here.. SK, LM, VC all so fabulous...

BUT.. I also love the beautiful simple solitaires I see on here..with beautiful diamonds...

It's really personal preferences.. do you really think it's a fad? There are so many antique settings out there and while the halo has certainly evolved it does appear to be timeless.. I'm still a rookie but isn't Harry Winston pretty famous for halo settings???

I'm almost 50.. my first ring was a small three stone... 1 ct. total weight... so I guess I just tried to go all out the second time around.. and the halo was it for me.

I voted by the way.. obviously.. #3

I am a halo lover for my diamond ring, and I am madly in love with mine, too, MayK
In fact, if "halo" is a trend, then I am fine with it !!!
I don't care !!!! love love love !!!!!!!!!

In fact, in my world, people fall all over themselves to admire my halo ring
(which I wear on my right hand) and completely diss my big ol' 5 stone .... Go Figure !!!!

I am no help with settings because I could never get it right either. But I DO think when you are so stumped on a setting sometimes it means you are stuggling with some other aspect of your ring. Like, a struggle between a desire for a larger diamond than you have and social norms. Or a struggle between wanting flash and being uncomfortable with attention. Or a struggle with how much money was spent, but wanting it anyways. Or something else, those are just some things I have dealt with myself or had friends struggle with.

Dreamer, I think these are some of the wisest words re setting difficulties that I have read on PS. You hit all my issues on the head.

Re OP: I am no help either as I love just about every setting I've ever seen for one reason or another. Including halo's, big ones small ones, in between ones...

HI:

I love well done halo's. Like little hands framing or supporting the center weight. Very organic.

Just wouldn't want one for my ER.

cheers--Sharon

I love well done halo's. I am not a big fan of solitaires unless they are exquisite OEC's or Cushions. I HATE princesses with a passion....It really is to each his own.

I love how they look and for a long time I planned to get one. I was worried that they would be dated looking in a few years, but most styles do. You can look at many rings and roughly estimate the time they were purchased. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing.

I guess I do dismiss them in my mind a bit for that reason. I do still love them. Some pricescope halos are exceptionally well done. Some have made me swoon. If I ever have to have my ring remade, I just may have to get Leon to make me one.

I don't necessarily think they're a trend, because they've been around forever!

I just got back from the single stone trunk show. I had to change my mind after looking at all the gorgeous halos!!! Those delicate halos are very beautiful!!!

I don't but my jeweler did, when I was planning my reset 3 years ago. He told me: "halo? eh, everybody's been doing that the past couple years, that's no longer the thing to do." Even though he did a great job on my split shank solitaire (the other style I was already considering) I've had a niggling regret that I didn't pursue the halo further.

Personally, I love the delicate presence a halo adds to a ring. It's the framework for the main show of the center stone.

After looking at the poll, I wanted to ask the people who voted that halo rings look like cocktail rings or that they don't notice the stones, if they think there are certain halo styles that do not look like cocktail rings or that showcase the stone better? Pictures of these rings would be much appreciated.

I think halos are great if use for the right purpose.

White halos make colored diamonds pop!

Some really delicate halos work beautifully with smaller stones like Tiffany's round soleste earrings (think center stone is merely 0.20). In fact, the over 1 ct soleste rings are also very classy. they are examples of halo designs that do not feel "I'm trying to trick you into thinking I'm big".

And I just adore Mayk's cushion halo which I'm saving up to get for my RB who is desperately in need of a makeover.

I like them on coloured stones (enhances them IMHO) but not on diamonds. I appreciate the craftsmanship though. They definitely are not that popular in the uk so it's not as if I'm just sick of seeing them everywhere. Just not my style. The best halos hands down, are all on PS!

I LOVE step cuts in brilliant-cut halos. The stone styles are so different, the contrast makes for a really striking and beautiful look IRL  That goes for rose cuts in halos, halos made of rose cuts...

I also like unusual halos - scalloped edges, engraving, open space intertwined with diamonds...

I don't generally like rounds and cushions in halos - Mayk, yours is an exception, and NOT just because you've posted it in this thread already! I like that the halo stones are bigger, big enough that you can see the outline of each one individually, and the edge is almost scalloped. Super-delicate thin-line-of-glitter type halos aren't my style but I can appreciate good workmanship.

FWIW, 29% of the first 100 rings to come up on a Google Image search for just "engagement ring" had halos.

That's a very strong trend.

I don't dismiss halos, but I see very few well made ones.

I haven't always been comfortable with a solitaire. It took me years to get used to wearing my e-ring, which is a cartier 1895 style solitaire. However, when I saw the halo, I immediately was comfortable with it. It just seemed to "make sense". I don't know why or how. And if there is a big stone with a halo around it, and people think that it's so big that it looks like a cocktail ring, that is fine with me. I don't care if they think it's fake. I know its real. I am planning on getting my new ring made into a halo style, as long as it is WELL made. I am hoping Victor Canera can help. Based on what all the PSers say, he will produce something beautiful.
