If a stone gets a AGS ideal 0 for cut and ideal for polish, symmetry and proportion could you safely say it will exhibit an H&A pattern? Of course seeing a photo or the real thing would be ideal but let's say you can't see it in person.

Thanks for giving me your best answer. I almost think this might have been discussed here at some point.

no

Just to expand on Storm''s accurate (but brief) reply, um... no. :)

Hearts and Arrows patterns are caused by super-precise optical symmetry - which is not a factor considered when the AGS0 grade is awarded. So, a stone can be AGS0, but not a true H&A stone (just like mine).

For more information you can read up here:

and here:

So, whilst my stone is AGS0, it isn''t H&A. Having said that, my stone does exhibit patterning of that nature: just not precise enough for it to be considered an H&A diamond. (See photo attached).

Cleo, those are some great links!!

Thanks for the comments. The links were really helpful in explaining AGS and GIA differences.

As Cleo mentioned, most well-cut stones will have patterning that closely resembles H&A, but it may not be nearly precise enough to be considered a ''true H&A'' by those with stringent standards.

Alison didn''t you do a thread all about H&A''s at one time? I was looking for it and can''t find it; do you happen to have the link?

Many a diamond with very good cutting will exhibit some variant of hearts and arrows sufficient that a retailer might show you the pattern and strongly imply that what you are seeing is an H&A pattern, but never revealing that there are specific details to this pattern which determine the true H&A look..
