Does a platinum setting make a diamond look whiter?

Platinum is a whiter metal than white gold, right? So would that help make a stone look less coloured if it is towards the lower end of the colour scale? Price-wise it might be a negligible difference, since it seems roughly about the same cost to upgrade from white gold to platinum vs. going up a letter grade or two (???), but I''m curious to know if platinum noticably affects the appearance of the stone. Thanks!

No...if anything because it''s whiter it actually makes the yellowness more apparent in a stone. Think about putting an H diamond on a white piece of paper vs. an off white piece. If the diamond has a bit of yellow in it, you''ll be able to see the difference more between the diamond and the white sheet. If the paper is a bit yellow, the diamond looks comparably much whiter.

They usually recommend yellow gold to mask color, but I think anything down to a very well cut J can look great in platinum and sometimes even warmer stones depending on the cut and setting.

Platinum will not make a stone look whiter than white gold will. White gold is rhodium plated, so it looks just as white, maybe even whiter than platinum when the rhodium plating is not worn. If you want the diamond to appear whiter, put your money towards a higher color diamond!

FYI, I remembered where I had first heard something like this:

I think platinum won''t bring out whiteness of a lesser color, however yellow gold can reflect yellow light into an otherwise colorless diamond. So the paper analogy isn''t pefect because there''s more to consider than just contrasting metal color vs diamond color.
