I know that its a very delicate stone but I''m so mezmerized by it. Just got this gal today and the different looks she gives me in the sunlight... can I just say "WOW". This is my daughter''s birthstone and I thought I would start a little collection for her. Or I may just have it put into a pendant and surprise her someday!

Lovely Mochi. I adore Opals. Is it an Andamooka semi-black?

Your daughter is very lucky.

Opals should be worn so that they attract moisture and don't dry - there's a good excuse for making a pendant right there!

LD... I''m afraid I don''t know that much about opals. All I know about this particular one is that it''s a harlequin (sp)...

It''s beautiful Mochi, I love opals too. When is your daughters birthday? My grandsons is October 20th.

I love the way it changes, its never the same. This one is indoors....

We don''t do many of these, but that''s the beauty of this kind of rarity. This was a boulder, very intense.

Linda...my daughter''s is October 7. She just turned 21, but still does not appreciate gemstones or anything like that. So I''ll just have to keep it for her, it''s going to be painful, but I must do this as a motherly duty, until I know she will care for these! LOL!!

Mochi that's not a harlequin. A harlequin has colours in a pattern like a pierrot doll's clothes - so the colours all join into a checkboard pattern. Not sure if that makes sense? It's a very rare pattern found in Opals.

Have a look at this website as they specialise in Opals and their glossary and pictures are lovely to look at and learn from!

ETA Mochi/Linda - my daughter is 5 so I have a LONG time to look after everything for her!!!!!

Mochi - I've got some opals similar to yours and I'm pretty sure you've got a semi black. Let me know if you want to see photos and I'll post up.

Love opals!!! Doc that is gorgeous!!! Mochi how nice of you to start a collection for your DD.

Mochi--you''re a sweet mom! Opals are so cool--I want one. I like contra luz opals and fire opals that exhibit play of color.

Nice opal Doc!

Pretty opal Mochi. Dan Stair is currently cutting a harlequin pattern. I can''t wait to see the finished product.

I loooove opals! They and pearls are my favorites.

This is also Dan''s stone. He described it as "harlequin-like", not a harlequin opal, my fault. I''ve been looking at his opals, they are so pretty.

gorgeous opal....

My birthday is 10/01.

I would kill to get my hands on a boulder opal! It''s on my wish list.
I have a couple of white opals from my parents. One set with an opal and tanzinte ring.

I love fire opals too!

Lots of October babies! I''m 10/29. I''ve got a nice sized fire opal pendant my gramma gave me on my wedding day. It''s got a crack inside it, but I don''t care b/c my grampa made it for her, so it''s super special to me! Gramma gave me an opal recently that she and grampa dug on one of their trips to Australia, but I haven''t figured out what to do w/it yet.

I love opals and this one is so pretty. I don''t have any because I love "sparkles" but opals are gorgeous.

I love opals. I wore an opal as my wedding pendant. There is an opal dealer who has a truck show here in town a couple of times a year, and I love seeing his beauties. Although, I hesitate to spend the big bucks on such a fragile stone. But, they are certainly gorgeous. And, each one is so unique. Most people can''t tell two well-cut colorless diamonds apart, other than by size. But, everyone can see how each opal is different than the next one. That may be the other reason I hesitate to get one. How do I pick when they are all so gorgeous?

That one you have is very, very pretty.

Sorry, it's not a harlequin. It's typical of light opal from Coober Pedy, Australia, with color play known as multicolor broadflash. The body color would be described as N8 or N7 (very light to light gray). It's a pretty stone. The image below is a true Harlequin.
