I do. Drawers full of stuff I feel sentimental about and never ever wear. I’m debating donating lots of it but I think the sentimental feelings would prevent me!

What’s your situation like?

Yes for sure. I’ve never sold anything though I have given stuff away. So there’s that. I am not a seller and I would just rather keep it for my nieces when they get older. There have been a few times I think well I’d love to get some money for some of my expensive pieces I no longer wear but then I get lazy. Plus taste changes and I may decide to wear them again. Except for my heavy earrings. I won’t ever want to go back to those. A shame as I have some beautiful blingy earrings but if they weigh over 5 grams total I won’t wear them anymore. Don’t want to put stress on my lobes.

I do have alot that I don't wear, both gold and sterling.
I have plans to sell most of the sterling stuff, but the gold I will keep.
I always say that maybe one day I will need to trade a gold chain for a loaf of bread.......:eek2:

No, I try to keep my box reasonably "current". I have some sentimental things or projects I designed and had commissioned from the ground up that I wont ever sell, but anything else is always up for the chopping block. I have tons of necklaces I can't currently wear thanks to my toddler but I know I will wear them again in the future.

I have tons but I won’t get what I paid and I have my daughter and 3 DIL who would be happy to rummage thru and get goodies.

You could ask the same about people who keep money they aren't using.

Maybe some think of it (money or jewelry) as savings.

I do keep stuff longer than necessary. I'm not very sentimental. The problem is, none of it is really worth anything. I was actually thinking of just donating some silver and gold stuff. i don't know. I've given my daughters everything half way decent. The rest is just junk really. I don't know why I do this!

I constantly purge when I have my eyes set on a new piece-- that forces me to examine my loyalty to the items that I don't wear as much. I can think of 5 pieces that I wish I would have kept and can't recall what I traded them up for..Lol. Hubby calls it sellers remorse and has put a ban on my selling off any of my antique/Edwardian or Art Deco items Bc he says those are irreplaceable, but I continue to purge my contemporary pieces. I have amassed quite a collection so that I've gotten to the point where I keep my Nicest stuff in the safe deposit box and swap pieces out once a month. I don't feel guilty about having them in the bank just like I don't feel guilty about having money in the bank. Lol.

I do and I don't...I have pieces that for whatever sentimental reason have not left my possession...but my collection is rather modest so I also don't have too many pieces that will I would consider to be "clogging up space."

I do and I'm lazy that is why. I wouldn't say I have tons, but I do have some yellow gold stuff from the 80s that I should just get rid of.

I occasionally sell jewelry to fund other purchases. I went through a stage when I actively bought on eBay or auction to resell at a better price. Well, that was what I told hubby! I collect vintage watches, I have about 30 at the moment. I am “banned” from buying anymore unless I sell some I already have. For me at least, part of my love of gems and jewelry is the search and bargain hunting.

I can relate to all of these answers! I like to keep for sentimental reasons, and also to one day trade for bread (if need be!) and because I’m lazy and to leave for my daughter to enjoy. But I want to sell and give away to be more organized and have some spare cash.

.

No.

Same goes for everything.

This is an extremist practice ...

I stopped buying jewellery or gemstones a few years ago. Pretty happy with what I have and will pass them onto family when the time is right.

Do you find it challenging at all?

No.

I am not sure why. I tend to pick small keepsakes from interesting times & places, but they are almost never jewelry - the sum total fills a large paper envelope & a small box which fits in my palm ... I tend to feel giddy happy erasing the past, so to speak, at the end of each year .-) (certainly enjoyed the lates EOY this way ! )

How odd is it !?

1. Sentimental reasons,
2. I'm too lazy to get around to selling it or
3. It's a cheaper item (say below 1k) that's not worth the time and hassle to resell it and so it sits unworn.

For items above 1k that I don't wear, I try to rehome them so I can put the funds towards new bling pieces that I actually will wear. =)2

No kids but haven't thought much about what will happen to my stuff later (I'm in my mid 30s so haven't really thought that far ahead quite yet!). Probably I'll pass them to my friends' kids as there are a couple of little girls amongst them who have the bling bug. :D

I have sold and will sell jewelry and gemstones that don't have personal significance, but Yup, I keep jewelry I don't ever wear ... for sentimental reasons. Some of it is jewelry from when I was a young girl, some from family members, and some is stuff DH bought for me ... even though I can't/don't wear them, each of them has meaning ... when I finger these pieces and see them happy memories flood into my mind. These are small pieces of my personal history and I prize them. Periodically I go through my treasures and pull out certain pieces and re-tell the stories that go along with them ... good times.

I sold all of my yellow gold that was dated and I did not like any longer. Made enough to purchase my diamond studs! Don't anticipate selling any other jewelry in the near future.

Yes, mostly for sentimental reasons; a ring my first boyfriend got for me, 2 rings my Mum got me when I was in my late teens/early 20's. I also have a handful of Tiffany's silver jewelry I have accumulated throughout my twenties. Hoping my 2 girls will want to wear them one day. :kiss2:

I got rid of the old yellow gold stuff that was dated years ago. I kept some special pieces like and engraved locket and bangle that were special birthday gifts, though. Since coming to PS, I only buy classic pieces or antique style pieces (all fine jewelry, no fashion jewelry) which hopefully will never look dated. I really don't wear most of my jewelry very much, but I have two daughters and two granddaughters so far that hopefully will treasure them down the road. I plan to give most if it away over time so they can enjoy it while I am living!

Same - I don't buy fashion jewelry and try to purchase classic pieces as well. However, I only have one daughter but hopefully will have a few grandaughters over time. And perhaps a nice daughter in law one day too. My MIL gave some of her special pieces to me over the years, for the same reason, so that I can use it and enjoy while she's alive. They were all stolen in a home robbery in 2001.

I have sold/melted almost all of my older jewelry that I didn't wear, I do have some that has sentimental value that I would never sale or get rid of...it just didn't make sense to keep stuff I would never wear and I can always use the money...

It’s funny because I’m notorious For selling everything but there a handful of items I won’t sell even if I rarely wear them. My zircon ring, in my opinion, is entirely too good a find to ever let go. Also my original wedding band doesn’t go with my e ring now but I think my kids would like me to keep it so it stays

No I’ve never listed that and I won’t. I told my husband when we win the lotto he has to replace it with a diamond :lol-2:

Oh, that is so sad, Queenie! But it is lovely that your MIL gave special pieces to you. That's a wonderful tradition to carry on!

No. The only thing I keep that I don't wear often is my antique pear ring. My daughter is a very unique girl and LOVES this ring. It will be her engagement ring someday.
