Do You Have a Vanity License Plate?

No, we don't have vanity plates on our car. Though my dh did have one on his miata before he got rid of the car. That was in order to honor his friend who died in a motorcycle accident. :(sad The plate was his nickname from college.

This seems to be your mantra these days.

Any Seinfeld fans?? Vanity plates remind me of the a**man episode :)

Nope, I've never really cared for them. I also was told by a cop during a self defense class that they do make your car more noticable and can be a safety concern, so even if I did want one I'd probably be swayed away based on that.

I have one. The reason being I was raised in CA where getting a vanity plate was SO expensive...and even if I wanted to pay for it, everything I could think of was taken. I guess that's what happens when you live in a state with, what, 40 million people? Now I live in Nevada. Vanity plates are cheap and it's much easier to get the plate you want. It's sort of ridiculous how many people have them. According to wiki, about 13% of plates were vanity plates as of 2007. I'd bet that's higher now.

The survey ranked jurisdictions by "vanity plate penetration rate", which is the percentage of registered motor vehicles that are vanitized.[1] Virginia has the highest U.S. vanity plate penetration rate (16.19%), followed by New Hampshire (13.99%), Illinois (13.41%), Nevada (12.73%), Montana (9.8%), Maine (9.7%), Connecticut (8.14%), New Jersey (6.8%), North Dakota (6.5%) and Vermont (6.1%). Texas had the lowest vanity plate penetration rate (0.5%).

Never thought of that.

Never thought of that.

My DH is a deputy sheriff. When we met I had plates that were a play on my first name. I eventually sold that car and he made me get rid of the plates for the same reason. The ones I have now are on our truck that doesn't get driven too often, and there's nothing identifying about them. But it's true, it's impossible to be annonymous with vanity plates.

I got it for fun.

People vary.

Is it fun? Do people ask you about it or anything? Is it a conversation starter?

Yes to all three.
We have had a lot of fun with it over the years.
It is I think $45 a year . . . cheaper than a fancy restaurant bill, but it's not pooped away the next day.

Oh, well, I can understand it then . . .

i've seen many obscene vanity license plates... :naughty:

Are you sure you aren't just imagining that they are obscene?

We can't get them here but I wish we could cos I love looking at them! It's the first thing I do whenever I'm in the US!! So entertaining.

Nope, never saw the need.

Plus, they are more recognizable by others. I like being anonymous when driving. ;))

so you were the one driving around town with the license plate "36 24 36"?.. :naughty:

I love the idea of it but I heard it isn't good to have them since people can track you easily. Maybe I am just paranoid about that stuff.

They vary in cost by state. In MN, it's $100 more per year. In Nebraska, though, it's far cheaper (like maybe $25?) so I saw a LOT more of them when I lived there.

This comment really surprised me, since I have personalized plates in MN. Rubybeth, the extra cost is $100 initially, NOT every year. Replacement plates are $14, as opposed to the usual $6, so not that much more. I just renewed my tabs, and there was no additional cost. We have Critial Habitat plates on one car, and those are an extra $30 every year.

Yes! Kramer got his plates mixed up with a proctologist's plates!

This thread also makes me think of that gameshow Bumper Stumpers.
