Do you believe this or do you think this is a publicity stunt of some kind, a way to get attention? When I heard that it had been considered as a plan (and discarded) early this morning, I assumed that wiser heads had prevailed and that it could never come to pass.

"WASHINGTON — President Trump said Friday he was open to releasing migrants detained at the border into mostly Democratic 'sanctuary cities,' suggesting that the idea should make liberals 'very happy' because of their immigration policies.

Mr. Trump’s comments come a day after his administration said the policy proposal was never seriously considered. But after the president’s Twitter posts on Friday, a White House spokesman said Democrats should work with the administration to welcome migrants into their districts.

'Democrats say we must have open borders and that illegal immigrants have a right to be in this country at all costs,' the spokesman, Hogan Gidley, said, adding, 'so they should be working with the administration to find the best ways to transport those illegal aliens that are already set for release, into communities in their districts and states.'”

if this is just a teaser of the rhetoric we are going to get between now and 2020, lord have mercy. so, we're just abandoning being a country and are going to embrace full on tribalism? down that road lies secession/civil war.

At this time they are released into border towns and cities. Sounds like NIMBYism to me when someone calls foul on release in sanctuary cities. This is not supposed to be an opinion piece but it sure reads like one.

This particular paragraph should have a quote or attribution, otherwise it is opinion.

Democratic lawmakers do not want “open borders,” as the president has suggested. They favor improving border security, but they do not support many of Mr. Trump’s hard-line immigration policy proposals, such as building a wall along the southwestern border.

I think its a good idea.
Make the liberal cities put their money where their mouth is and see how long it takes them to change their tune.

Better yet put up a sign up sheet for liberals to get in line for taking them into their houses.
See how many actually sign up!

It's not NIMBYism b/c these particular cities inly are being targeted for political reasons. All cities should contribute. It should not just be the border towns. Logistically, it's hard to distribute the responsibility and that's am issue that should be addressed but this is not the way to do it. It's frankly beneath the bar we should hold our leaders to.

Excuse the typos, got a new phone a few months ago and it is so hard to type on....

We have plenty of citizens to contribute to rather than tens of thousands of people entering illegally. These particular cities are refusing to cooperate with ICE for the removal of people here illegally, which is reprehensible IMO.

For those awaiting a hearing they are not here illegally. I could boil it down equally simply and say, great, let's walk back those tax cuts to the wealthy so we have the funds to tend to our citizens AND our immigration problems. Our issues are systemic and need both parties to work together to make progress. The response from our government is theater.

The government has been unable to fix the immigration problems for decades, both parties. Neither side has any desire to actually do anything about it, for different reasons.

Why is no one thinking of the asylum seekers? Are they to be bused anywhere at all, scattered to the four winds just because they exercised an international right they have as refugees? How will they be able to keep their hearing dates at their ports of entry if they have been shipped many miles away from where they entered the country and been given dates at which time they must appear in court? Will anyone be keeping track of them and the court dates they were assigned or will they be simply "lost" like the children who were thrown to the four winds without being tracked?

I am a liberal and I think these human beings deserve more than they are getting now, not less. If the government set up a fastidious plan in which migrants were seen by asylum judges; given case numbers that were not lost; sent to well-run centers that were spaced throughout the country where they were not separated from their families; provided with social services, and given transportation back to their ports of origin for court dates; I would gladly welcome them into my neighborhood. The center where I used to teach citizenship is a center which helps immigrants to hthis community.

But there must be a plan for them. These are human beings, not trash. Trump separated the children from their parents as if they were not human beings with human rights. If he implements this plan, he will be doing it again: treating humans as if they are sub-human.

If I said "pigs can't fly" would you ask for an attribution? The paper just printed a fact and, really, redwood, you know better. No Democrat said he wanted to open the borders and let everyone in the entire world in. You are being ridiculous.

No I am not being ridiculous. The piece reads as opinion rather than news reporting.

Hi,

Redwood, Karl, I agree with you both. There is no democratic candidate who has any ideas on how to fix the border problem. (maybe Castro) What is a tragedy is separating children from their parents, but, a flood of asylum seekers, which is occurring presently, also must be addressed. Asylum seekers were always allowed to wander the country. They were just supposed to turn up for their hearings.
Trump has the border issue, and the issue is valid, but dems don't want to address it. And please, try to remember the things that some of you have said in the past. Deb, I recall you wanting open borders, along with Matata. There are those here on his board that do not agree with that.

Its a great idea to put them in Sanctuary Cities. And I hope you will open your homes to these poor people.

I agree that there is too much "using" of the issue and not enough fixing. The closest we've gotten in my lifetime to doing something that could have a major impact that I can recall is GWB's migrant worker visa program and it is a shame some form of that has not been adopted.

Scapegoating immigrants is not an answer. It's an odious tactic that is as old as this country. We should learn our lesson and hold our representatives to focusing on constructive solutions.

I'd love to see a new political party that embraces common sense and compassion. One thing no one talks about is how both parties have abandoned fiscal responsibility. It is hurting our country.

Your "recollection" about me is false, Annette. I never said I wanted open borders. Open borders means letting everyone in, not screening people. I find that truly bizarre. If you think I ever said that I challenge you to find where I said it.

90% of these so call asylum seekers will not return for their court date.

Hi Deb,

Since I do not have the skills to go back and look for it, I can recall that the "open borders" comment occurred during the European crisis--Greeks helping boatloads of people, and refugees trekking across Europe. This was when Germany said it was opening its borders. I'm sorry that I cant look for it, but it is in my memory bank. I m glad that perhaps, when it comes to the US borders you are not asking for open borders. I agree, it would be bizarre.

Annette

I do believe in allowing refugees to escape violence and to seek asylum under international law, Annette. I would believe humans should be able to run for their lives from violence in Syria as well as El Salvador. That does not mean I believe in "open borders". Germany has allowed in a record number of refugees from Syria. I am not saying that the US could or should take in the exact same number. (Nor am I saying we should not.) Germany processed all of those refugees, however. They just did it quickly, with typical Teutonic efficiency. The refugees they accepted all underwent a screening process. I wish we could establish an efficient manner of judging whether asylum seekers meet the criteria for asylum in a timely manner the way Germany does. If we did they would not need to be detained in camps or wander the country aimlessly missing court dates. Nor would they have to be teargassed at the border and shoved back into Mexico.
