I'm sorry to hear that, ksinger. You and your husband are wonderful. I love your passion about education, and I imagine your husband is an excellent educator.

We often focus on the bad teachers, but truly, sometimes all it takes is for a child to have *one* good experience with *one* great teacher to leave a lasting impression. Your husband is probably that teacher for many students.

I hope so Haven. I know he tries. If there is one thing that is a burning flame with him it is a love of history, followed by trying to get people whomped up about it. But the situation here (as in many places now) is very grim indeed. The middle class is truly dying here in Oklahoma. The poverty in his district is just grinding, and when you add it to the massive general dysfunction of public education in Oklahoma (See Brecheen again for a representative issue we deal with yearly), well.... I ask him what keeps him going, and his answer is that if he can help even ONE kid a year to escape velocity (more would be better of course) out of poverty by making it to college, he has earned his keep. Maybe others would disagree, but they aren't exactly running to teach in rough inner city districts either. Those kids need good teachers more than anyone.

On the upside, we do run into many of his students while out and about, and they usually run up to him to chat. They seem to remember him fondly. LOL, at least the ones that don't run screaming the other direction! Oh, and this year he's actually teaching with one of his first AP kids. We've even gone out for drinks after work with the guy. It's kinda weird and fun.
