Do Jewlers really switch your diamonds?

Or is this just a scary thing to think about when you are dropping your ring(s) off to the jewelers?

I just dropped off and pick up my wedding band. It is a vintage piece, 6 diamond round stone, color F and I dropped it off to get the prongs secured. I looked at it with the jewler under the "telescope thingy" (Sorry I know nothing about anything really

) and I saw the loose prongs, and also an inclusion?? in one of the stone.

Upon getting it back I noticed that the color of the last diamond looks a bit dull almost like it is a different color. This diamond is also raised abit, maybe making light shine through giving off the look of a dull color? I don''t know if it has that slight raised look because of the new prongs and it shifted upon setting it?

It could be some gunk from the process or muck is stuck on the ring or diamond making it look dull or different. Try a good cleaning. If the setting is white gold then don't use ammonia, if plat or yellow gold then try some diluted sudsy ammonia, soak the ring for half an hour, scrub gently and rinse. Also if you feel the stone isn't secure, I would go back and show the jeweller and see what he suggests, he might clean the ring for you too. I have seen this happen before so I wouldn't be surprised if this is what has happened.

Switching diamonds is rare, most jewellers are hardworking individuals who value their good name and won't risk it especially switching out tiny diamonds ( I assume the diamond is relatively small being one of 6 stones) so I wouldn't worry too much.

was it appraised before hand? If so, get it checked by the same appraiser again to confirm if you are really worried.

THANK YOU Lorelei - that might be just what it needs. It is like black - kinda gunk on the side of it. It is white gold. What can I use for white gold?

Most welcome! Sounds like some gunk for sure. Try some Scrubbing Bubbles if you have some or Mr Clean. If Mr Clean dilute and soak as above, scrub carefully and rinse. If you don't think the stone is secure though go back to the jeweller and get him to check it and also show him your concern, he should be able to clean the ring for you. Sometimes this sort of stuff can be stubborn and ordinary methods won't work, so if you have no luck getting it off, a pro clean should help.

Might not be strong enough if it is some stuff stuck from the jewellers. I have seen this happen before where a jeweller has had to use methods such as acids or other professional strength solutions or techniques to get this stuff off.

I''m having a hard time picturing this ring but Like Lorelei said, I highly doubt somebody would be willing to risk their business with that practice. It''s just not worth it. Is it possible that in the adjusting process, they removed several diamonds and reset them so they are now in different positions? Maybe they found more than one that was loose.

If the warm soapy water doesn''t work bring it back to them , and have them clean it for you. I had that happen once and they put it in an acid bath, came back super clean and whte.

Jeweler''s rarely switch stones, it''s not worth losing their reputation and their business over...
