I just bought this diamond, and I'm ashamed to admit that it was only after the purchase that I noticed the comment on the GIA report that said "clarity grade was partially based on clouds not shown".

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.31-carat-f-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-872701

How concerned should I be by this? I can see them in the 360 view, but don't know how much of an impact it will make. I want this thing to sparkle like crazy, which is why I bought a true heart. I called JA and they said since it is a vs2, the clouds should not be a problem.

Their gemologist is going to call me in a day or two when they have the diamond in hand. Is there anything in particular I should ask?

Thanks in advance

Well, we (us PSers) used to think the same thing but we recently had a guy return a VS2 with clouds because it looked foggy/cloudy
or not crisp...cant remember his wording. I wish I could find the thread again (maybe someone else can). So, I dont know if the
person was over reacting to what he read or if it really did have issues.

I do think this "cloudyness" in a VS2 stone is on a stone by stone basis because we have had other people with clouds in VS2s with no issues.

Ask the gemoglist if it looks foggy, cloudy or less brilliant than it should. If he hems and haws about it then dont go with it. If he
says he can't see anything whatsoever then it might be ok.

Yes, ask the gemologist. Recently, I was looking at a VS2 with a cloud inclusion. I was surprised because it was definitely a bit hazy. This haziness was especially noticeable because I was comparing it next a a similar diamond (same size, almost identical specs) without a cloud inclusion.

Thanks, it sounds like I will just have to wait to hear what he says then. JA seems to have a good reputation on this website, so I assume I can trust his judgement.

Is it normal for the plot to have both crystal and cloud listed in the legend, but nothing marked on the map? I'm not sure if this is normal or a display issue with the website.

You have every right to be alarmed. In my eyes it is not a comment that should be ignored, especially bcs the plots don't show anything, but you will know more when you get the opinion of the expert.

I learned one thing that might be helpful to others new to this. You can pull up the actual certificate from the AGS website. From there I was able to see the plot mappings that were missing in the copy on the JA website. Apparently a scanner issue. It does have some crystal and cloud inclusions plotted.

I just got off the phone with the gemologist. He said it did look slightly cloudy, but only because he looks at stones all day. It's not something I would notice and he would rank it as a very minor issue. He said the diamond was very sparkly and balanced. I'm going to trust his opinion and proceed, hopefully when I see it in person I'll realize I was worrying about nothing.

that's really interesting - thanks myers80!

so now i'm wondering... i am looking at a diamond that says "additional clouds not shown", but when i go to the AGS website and look it up, the doc is the same as it appears on the WF website. so maybe you can't always get more info from AGS. ?

The difference between the JA and AGS certs isn't so much in the wording - it's the details on the inclusion plots. When I was shopping for diamonds on JA, I noticed that most of their certificates were scanned so poorly that I wasn't able to see the inclusion plots. I always had to go to the source (GIA/AGS) and look at the online PDFs to be able to zoom in and find the inclusions.
