I have heard from a few girlfriends that diamonds always look bigger once they are set in a ring? Is this some sort of universal truth that I''ve missed out on learning about up until now? Can people speak from experience? Are there certain types of settings (besides Halo, obviously) that make round stones appear larger?

Thanks!

Yes, they do. And the higher they sit in the setting, the more it helps also.

Gracias!

Usually they do -- but not always. A simple setting (plain band) with dainty prongs will not necessarily make the diamond look larger. But I personally like that -- it is what it is, without ''external help''!

I find that they look a bit smaller in a bezel with a thick shank. Other than that really, they do tend to look bigger. Just my perspective...

This is just my experience but when a stone is loose it looks really small then set it does appear to be bigger even if it is a solitaire. Now if you want to make it appear really big then a halo will help and can really make it sparkle alot also. I know a girl that has a 1/4 carat halo''d and it looks way bigger and everyone always comments on how big her ring is. If you look close through the stone is small. Hope that helps.

I agree it looks larger. To look huge bezel and halos work wonders.

IMHO diamonds look bigger in settings than when they are loose.

yes, they do look bigger once they''re set. a tapered setting will make the stone appear larger.

Ditto above - halos and bezels really increase the size too by drawing the eyes outwards. A stone sitting higher in its setting does too as Ellen mentioned (be careful of increased risk of thunking it and chipping this way). Also having a thinner shank.
