Do 'apps' work on a puter? I have no smartphone

My puter is a Late 2015 iMac with apple's current operating system, 10.12.6

Not apps written for iOS or Android without an emulator or simulator but Apple are increasingly referring to applications as apps to blur the line between programs written to run on a mobile phone OS and ones written to run on a laptop OS so it’s hard to know the difference.
