I agree with you Sara. I don''t know the first thing about buying fancy shapes. I can read tutorials till they are coming out of my ears but I would never trust myself to buy a fancy shape by myself!
Thanks for postingDate: 3/22/2010 3:21:36 PM

Hi Maisie,
Can''t speak for everyone but we will stock fancies depending upon supply/demand for the shape.
For example the only pears, marquises, ovals and emerald cuts we''ll stock will be either those we have purchased through estate, taken on trade or have on consignment. Makes no sense to stock them since they are easily and readily available.
Princess cuts in way of AGS Ideal or even down to GIA Vg/Vg *with* AGS Ideal light performance we will stock regularly as we locate them as well as other fancy shapes & speciality cuts we''ll specialize in cut for light performance (Jubilee, Octavia, Star129, etc.) Being in NY many of the more common fancy shapes are right here in my backyard so it doesn''t make sense to lay out capital to carry. If things change and if a shape grows in demand (like cushion has for example) we''ll always stock what we know will be the rarest performers in a given shape. Till then we just cherry pick as the needs arise.
All the best,
The lady who works in my local post office has an EC ering. It''s quite big, I would say maybe 1.5cts. Its totally dead looking. Not one little gleam or sparkle or anything. I love EC diamonds and I know they don''t sparkle like rounds, but I would expect something from it!Date: 3/22/2010 3:26:05 PM

Maisie, I love the step cuts, too. With Octavia, you''re guaranteed a great stone.
I know nothing at all about ovals and wouldn''t even know where to start! I do think they''re pretty, though.
But I really do wish someone would start cutting a high quality emerald cut. There seems to be so little stock in emerald cuts, and what''s there is blah-looking. I seem to remember an old thread on asschers where Karl K and maybe some other vendors were saying that when asschers were became popular (due to ''Sex and the City'') lots of stones were recut to meet demand. I''m not sure if I''m remembering this right.
But I wonder if this meant fewer standard emerald cuts were being cut because the fashion was for square shapes.
I like the idea of them being less expensiveDate: 3/22/2010 3:33:46 PM

Thanks for the quick response.
Yes, less in demand and yes, less expensive.
Thank you! My e-ring is an EC too. When I am working again, I''m going to have DBL find me a really nice EC for a pendant to complete the set.Date: 3/22/2010 2:55:01 PM

Those diamonds in your AV are gorgeous Jen!
I am thinking of maybe buying myself a little something. But I would like to stay away from anything I have had before. When you look on the vendor websites like James Alllen, BGD, Goodoldgold, WF etc, they have lots of Fancy Shape stones listed but i''m not sure if they have them in stock or whether they need to be called in.
Ooh yes! 5ct sounds about right!! You should visit anyway, its not like its that far is it?Date: 3/22/2010 4:29:41 PM

Yes, they have some really good deals. I do like that website. The thing that puts me off getting a Daussi from there is that I''m getting over my preference for smaller stones, and I plan to buy one and trade it up from time to time, so I''ll going with DBL for the trade-up policy. I keep trying to picture the size that I''d like best and I fear it''s somewhere in the 5ct range![]()
I really love these Daussi rings and if you get one, I''m going to visit and try it on. Regularly.![]()

I was wondering if the familiar PS vendors have fancy shapes like Radiants, Ovals, Pears etc in stock or do they have to be ordered in? I know that most carry an inventory of Round Brilliants.
Do all the vendors get their fancy shapes from the same cutters?
After more than 30 years in the business I now get my entire inventory of princess and rounds from a single cutter. I stock no other diamonds, and there are a few reasons for this.
One reason is that I am just picky about where my inventory dollars go. There is always demand for the best rounds. The princess clients who find me have typically decided-on a peak performer as well, so I can rely on moving those shapes.
Another reason is that I can’t presume to know what someone will want in another shape until I speak with them and understand what they’re looking for. One look does not fit all and one of the benefits of that process is that our conversation always reveals details I will use in determining which contact I use to source the shape and cutting style. Honestly there are so few cutters producing what I consider top performance in fancies that each person I work for produces his or her own treasure hunt.
I have worked with you Wink so I am sure you will know what I am talking about here. A major part of the buying process for me is interacting with the vendor. I have to work with someone who loves their job. I like to have someone enjoy the excitement with me and help me down the purchase road. I loved every conversation I had with you Wink. You are a genuinely nice man who really does love his work. You have a way of working out exactly what will work and what won''t and you never try to make a customer spend more than they can afford.Date: 3/22/2010 5:46:06 PM

Lastly, if I had a lot of inventory, even all-winners, it might have prevented some of the nice interactions I’ve had with clients and my various professional contacts, and anyone who knows me also knows that I am in this business because I love people as much as gemstones and jewelry.

Fatal, isn''t it!? I want a yellow one too. Badly!
If you get one, I''ll be there! If you don''t, let''s go out for dinner anyway.
Maybe we could go halves? Wear it month about? It isn''t that far to drive. I''d be happy with a Daussi or any of David''s amazing yellow diamonds. I went to see them in person a while back and DH said I drooled a little. Classy!Date: 3/22/2010 6:07:43 PM

Sure, when I can find something that is exciting and worthy to present. That is why I referred to each fancy producing a Treasure Hunt. Sometimes you find the treasure, other times you do not.Date: 3/22/2010 5:54:38 PM

So just to clarify, you do sell fancies even though they aren''t on your HPD website?
Actually, I think there is something about fancy shapes and fancy colours that does look posh! Like, I don''t really notice an RB ring, but a fancy shape grabs my attention immediately.Date: 3/22/2010 6:14:20 PM
