A friend of mine is having a disco fancy dress theme night and I really need help with what to wear. My exams start next week and unfortunately her party is in the middle of my exams so I need something that''s easy to get. What would you wear to this? There are some 70''s dresses on ebay which I could just order but are they "disco" enough? Everyone always dresses up so much for these parties so I need something good! Thanks for your help!

Oh boy.....I was known and still am known by some people as a disco queen! I have tons of ideas, if you had some flared jeans and could find some platform shoes with a cap sleeve T shirt that would work. Lots of bright makeup, blue eyeshadow, lashes, pink lips and crazy hair would complete the look. Either curls in the hair or crimped would work. A popular look for eyes was a wash of bright blue eyeshadow with a bright white below the browbone, if the eyeshadows glittered so much the better.

A dress would work too, cap sleeves were big in the seventies here, add platforms and tights, plastic earrings - very vintage Top of the Pops!

Or hugely flared trousers with platforms, also popular were belts such as the ones VN's wear with the thick band and big buckle.

Those went nicely either with flared trousers with inches thick waistbands or dresses and A line skirts.

Flowery skirts ( peasant style) and high heeled boots were also popular.

Hair, if the front bits are shorter on your hair ( can't remember if they are) you could tong these pieces into a big sausage framing the face too. Oh and lots of hairspray so the sausages bounce.

Finishing touch - strong perfume, suggest Charlie, Cachet or more upmarket Rive Gauche by Yves st Laurent.

If you have any dress links from Ebay post 'em so we can see!

Fabulous, that would work really well! Wear tan colour tights and high heeled boots or platforms with it and you will have a look! Big earrings too and the blue eyeshadow and bright lips and you will look completely the part!

ooh thanks Lorelei!! They''re great ideas! Will have to root out my blue eyeshadow

Is that too 60s? I would probably take a plain black dress and add a shiny gold belt, gold earrings and sunglasses.

You should watch the Austin Powers movies and get your ideas from that. I remember there was a dress in the one that had the blonde girl and it was red or yellow and kind of clear. It sort of reminded me of one of those clear umbrellas. Anyway, those movies should inspire you for an over the top look.

I did a google search for Felicity Shagwell images and it turned up some fun looking clothes. The jumpers would be fun.

I actually got an old bridesmaids dress from a vintage store YEARS ago- it was a late 70's cotton candy pink dress which looks almost exactly like something from SNF. I got it super cheap too.

So you might want to check out any thrift stores... if you have even a minute... which seems you're short on. But I do echo, glossy BRIGHT pink or red lips and BIG HAIR as big as you can fluff it- like use the extra small foam rollers you sleep in... and tease them out. Or the reverse flip out, like Blondie...Then whatever you have - rock it out... and sequins... :-D

thanks for your help everyone! I wasn''t sure if that dress was too 60''s. I don''t think that I will be able to get to any thrift stores unfortunately but I might try over the weekend.
