Hi Everyone,

Well I've recently joined the crowd in looking for an engagement ring. What a stressful process it can be! I'm slowly climbing the very steep learning curve. Being someone that knows (knew!) next-to-nothing about jewelery, and even less about diamonds, I'm at the bottom looking waaaay up that curve! This site provides a pretty good climbing-rope though :)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has seen any interesting ring settings that are similar to what I'm looking for... I know it's a pretty specific request, but I figured that it can't hurt to ask :)

Firstly, I don't like the majority of ring settings that have a ring with a diamond sitting on top, either bezel or prong. I think there's too many rings that all look basically the same, with the exception of a few surface details. I know that's an exaggeration, of course, but most rings I think are a bit the same-ish. So:

I'm looking for something curved or flowing, something waved or floral-inspired, but not ultra-modern and 'cold' looking. It needs to be fairly delicate. Maybe none of that makes sense to anyone but me :) They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here's some examples of what I mean:

I know that my partner does not want a huge stone (she dislikes all large jewelery, not just rings). So I think she'd like a stone around 4-5mm in diamater, so I guess that makes it probably 0.5ct or there abouts (I guess I should be thankful since that won't put too much pressure on my bank account!!!). Here's some examples:

Now the problem is this: I can only find rings like this that either only accomodate very small stones (i.e. the Gillett's rings are made to take 0.15ct stones) or otherwise the rings are Japanese - no problem except that I can't speak it, or read it, and most Japanese jewellery website are in Japanese only.

I'm considering having one custom made at this point.

Lastly, I'm in Melbourne... any Aussies here that have spotted rings like that?

Cheers :)

Leon Mege is one of my very favorite designers. I saw this ring a while back (keep in mind the center stone is 1.71ct so a smaller center would look different... if very small those swoops might look larger in comparison and overpower it maybe?) He does custom work, so he could do something like what you are looking for.

ETA: I didn't see what was written after the links... I see you want about a .50ct, so it would look very different.

Here''s a swoopy, criss-crossing band by Leon.

Knox Jewelers has some similar, this one in particular is shown with a .50ct centre stone: here. There are several more similar ones there as well.

Hi Sera,

Thanks for the info, but those arent quite what I''m looking for either. They''re a bit large and I''d like the scrolling to be on the face not the side (from the top, that one I think would like more like a the ''standard'' style of setting that I''m not excited about!) Leon Mege certainly has a recognisable style though.

Have you looked at the Niwaka website? They''re a Japanese jewelry brand, but also have a store in New York.

I''m sure that when you say "I" you''re really talking about what you fancy your future betrothed wants, right?

ANYWAY, have you checked out our under 1 ct diamonds thread? You''ll be able to see MANY rings with under 1 ct stones in them. There are 23 pages of gorgeous rings there, perhaps something will catch your eye.

Good luck!

Yeah, I have looked at Niwaka, and they do have some designs that I like. Unfortunately, though, be it Kyoto or New York, I live in Melbourne, Australia. I''d hoped there might be some Australians on the forums that knew of something local that I could see in person... I might just have to buy one from the pics and hope for the best. I think they can look pretty different on a finger, or in person, though, comapred to the nice-white-background shots and close-ups that you view online.

Cheers,

SAJC

Well, actually, when I say ''I'', it means ''We'' in the sense that something ''We'' will like, and it also means ''I'' as in ''I'' am looking for the ring! Here''s a comment I made elsewhere about the reason that I''m searching for a ring without (much of) her input, for better or worse!

Hi sajc

I like the settings you have picked out they are quite feminine and pretty :). I like in QLD but have not really seen anything like those designs, most of what I have found in my searches have been poor imitations of tiffany''s work. There have been a few exceptions to this though :).

That said, and also not knowing your budget I would try Garry''s Store Holloway diamonds they are located in Melbourne and though I have not been there in person yet, the work looks impeccable on the website very delicate on the details :) I am not 100% certain but I think they do custom work as well but it is worth calling :) or there is Hardy Brothers they do custom work but they are fairly EXPENSIVE very nice though and the work again looks fantastic they carry quite a lot of Daniel K and it is very delicate and flowing. And finally Canturi again they do custom work and were really lovely to deal with :).

GL in your search :)

The company that sells a few of the rings I posted is Gillett''s, and they''re actually in Brisbane! :) I''m thinking of going up there to take a look at them if I cant find anything locally.

They have some really nice filligree rings! They''re the other type that I like (I love fine details and patterns) but my partner doesnt like them so much (due to the width).

I''ll check out the others too :)

Hi,

Thanks for the link. I''ve had a look at those before - some of those are getting closer to the kind of thing I''m looking for. I''d still prefer to be able to see the ring in person first... so I think I''ll follow up the Aus sites first and see what I can find. Thanks though!

Cheers!

I don''t know if you are still looking, but I just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth. I have the EXACT same taste as you two, and my solution was to go custom. My design is actually based on one of Gillett''s ring. For some reason I can''t access their website right now, but what I did was print out both my design and Gillett''s, and took them to some local jewelry store.
Luckily one of the jeweler had lots of selection that is very close to my taste, so I know I can trust them to do a good job, if I choose to go with them.

Meanwhile, here is a site that may have something to your taste, although they are based in the UK.
