Some of the jewelers I''ve worked with so far are reluctant to have me take their stones out and look at them in ordinary sunlight. Is this a must? Will there be anything in sunlight I may see that I wouldn''t in the store? Also, what other light sources should I try to see the stone in before the purchase? UV?

Jewelers lights make just about anything look good. I think anyone who won't at least let you take a stone outside has something to hide. There may be insurance issues, I don't know. But many people have posted on this forum that their jewelers were more than happy to let them take a diamond out into the daylight.

It makes perfect sense for a jeweler to be reluctant about taking a stone outside the store - especially on a busy street. Just think of all the possible horror scenarios - none of which would be covered by insurance!

Then how should someone be comfortable with the way a diamond looks in ordinary sunlight? I understand your point, but that's where you want to make sure the stone looks good.
