Different karat gold rings next to one another...

Is there any reason not to wear 10k or 14k wg next to 18k wg? Color differences is what I am particularly curious about.

The setting for my new ring will be 18k and my half eternity is 18k, but I will need a new plain gold band to match the thickness of my new setting and eternity band and would like to save some clams.

If they are rhodium plated you should not see a difference. I have plated 14k wg and plated 18k wg and do not notice a difference between them as long as they are plated.

Colour differences are noticeable between non-plated wg, even between wg in the same karat as they may contain different alloys.

As the plating wears off though, the 18k would be more "yellow" than the 10k generally speaking, right?

In general, yes...but lots of high nickel or high palladium alloyed golds are very white (lots of antique or vintage white gold rings for example were never plated and are very white decades later).

If you go with different manufacturers you may find one of them make a more yellow 18k wg and one a more white 18k wg. So you might want to check.

You may never notice any such difference though by time you go for the permanent setting. For me plating tends to last a while (ie a couple years) and then I often prefer the unplated look anyway so leave it. I would worry more if this was your long term setting.
