Differences in appraisals---Color/Clarity changes

Hi! New member and hoping for some answers from the experts. I recently upgraded my engagement ring, using the same center stone. When we originally purchased the center stone it was loose, and GIA certified as a D VS1. Once mounted in the original engagement setting, the appraisal we had done noted it as an E VVS2. (I know once mounted, color and clarity are subject to some +/- due to the setting). At the time, I was not worried about the slight differences in the color/clarity as they seemed reasonable and insurance value was fine.

Fast forward to today's appraisal. Same center stone is now being rated as a G VS1, which is yielding a much lower replacement value for insurance purposes than my previous appraisal.

Both settings (original and new) were Platinum, however, the original setting had more of an open mount, whereas this one is more closed off. Could that render the difference in color opinion, and should I even be concerned?

Both jewelers were highly reputable in my area, so I am not worried about the stone being swapped out. I'm only concerned that the replacement value on the current appraisal is too low, and God forbid anything happen to my stone, I'd be left with the value of a G and not a D.

Thoughts? Photos attached for reference from first appraisal and setting (shown as a "wedding set")

Thanks for any help/opionions!

I can’t really see your photos clearly, sorry. Surely if you have the GIA certificate that’s the proof for the replacement value of the stone, al least?

Did you show the GIA very to the appraiser? There should not be a D to G difference with the same stone that was certified by GIA. You get the most accurate assessment with a stone that is not mounted and they are graded face down. Something seems odd here.

You need to give your appraiser a copy of the GIA cert, and the appraiser needs to verify your diamond is truly the one described in the GIA cert. If it all works out, your appraisal should be adjusted accordingly.

Did you verify the GIA report number after it being reset on the new setting?

It is very possible that the appraiser grading the stone as G just can't see the lack of body color clearly. Show them the report and have them be sure the measurements are correct. Give the appraiser an opportunity to adjust their opinion. With fine color diamonds, you cannot really expect a mounted grading to match up very well with a legitimate major lab report. You should always show the report to the appraiser to give them any assistance you are able to provide in order to be sure your diamond is the correct one, not damaged or switched by some bad guy.

I assume the GIA report trumps ( no pun intended) the appraisers eye.

One more thing, if you've lost the GIA report your appraiser should be able to get the report number off the girdle of the diamond. They can then download a copy of the report from GIA's Report Check portal.

Is the diamond as clean as it was, when first graded as a D? Also, I believe grading standards have tightened? over the years (could be wrong on this).
