That''s pretty bothersome. How do they have the month and year of my birthday? Weird thing is, dh only has a few hits related to his business, no address, birthday, etc.

Ditto. I think those of us who are early net adopters are used to it, and less likely to imagine dire consequences. Not much different than any other cross directory or public record search.

I have used this name as an instant messenger name before and it's pretty unique, so people could figure it out. I'm more worried about someone I know stumbling on this site and figuring it out than someone Googling it. I highly doubt anyone would bother googling my old screen name just to see what comes up.

And even if they did figure it out, I can't say I really care.

ETA: I checked out pipl.com and it's really interesting if you have a unique name. When I type in just FI's last name, only about 10 people come up and most are related to him. Very easy to figure his info out! And when I look up my name (first and last), only four total come up. Interestingly, I worked at a company with one of them and so my email had to be laura.x.lastname because there were two of us (my middle name does not start with x ... I don't know why they didn't just use my middle initial). Kind of a crazy coincidence.

Same here. The only person I know that could make the connection is my husband, only because I''ve shown him threads and he''s aware of the "name" I use here... and I''ve never posted anything on here that I''d be bothered for him to see (I don''t think I could if I tried).

No one else could make the connection. The only thing that could happen would be someone somehow accidentally stumbles upon my wedding pic or ring pic thread and recognizes it. Then go about finding my other posts. It would be a major long shot, and the second part (going about finding my other posts) would require a curiosity about my interactions here that I sincerely doubt anyone I know has

that is scary.

I just searched for my old and new names on there. The old name search was really saturated with other people (super-common last name) and I got completely lost in the shuffle, and the new name search yielded only one site relating to a recent performance of mine. That's it!

I'd be interested to see how it grows over time...


I don't know about anyone else, but I'm absolutely not bothered by the fact that I'm googlable (with real or PS names). I'm fully aware of just how public and searchable the internet is, and I post accordingly - if I want things to remain unidentifiable, I know what details to leave out or spread out.

Really? First thing that comes up for me is my Amethyst thread. I guess because I put my PS name in the thread title...

ETA- That reminds me. If you google Tiffany Amethyst Pendant.........my thread comes up right below Tiffany's website

I don't know what I think about that. Actually, I don't like it, not one bit. lol I wish that it didn't come up. lol!
