members on the koi and watch forums also use the word "UPGRADE" quite often...

Which is more expensive . . . the typical high end koi, watch or diamond?

Does anyone have all 3?

So DF, you have 3 expensive hobbies? Why hasn't your wife killed you yet? :naughty:

Because the diamond hobby is to give to his wife? :p

If he wears them himself, he should be dead.

Add salt-water fish tanks to that

depends on you meant by typical?...

some of the watch nuts change watches like i change my T shirt.they'll play around with a $40K watch for a few months then sell it for a loss..

then there's this guy on the koi forum who probably is paying like $5-$6K per month in electric bill just to run his koi ponds..

I'd sell my soul for a Kohaku from Dianichi. I used to be obsessed with koi, and I'm so tempted to get back into them... the generations of work that go into those lines, and the incredible beauty...waiting at the airport for a fish to arrive after picking it from the mud ponds...it's a high, like getting one of your FCDs Kenny, and at $100,000+, in the same price range as some!

I think some of the watch nuts are probably spending more $ than people here. The population is also very different as it tends to be mostly men.

Wow  Salt is an art I never mastered, Koi are so easy, I had 4,000gal pond.

Well, my mom has the koi- she's crazy  and dug out a huge pond in her back yard herself like 10 years ago; she's a very serious gardener and she's transformed it into this amazing jungle-y oasis with the koi pond and a small waterfall and stuff. She kept a number of other large fish in there (fantails? Err. Can't remember!) and always swore she would never get into koi. Guess what I saw in her pond a few weeks ago :naughty: ? You guessed it. A koi. Apparently she'd had the koi for a few years but I'd never seen it, somehow- must've been hiding under the lilypads or something. It's grown pretty darn big. And the raccoon hasn't eaten it yet.

I guess between us I am into the diamonds and she's the fish nut, haha. Neither of us really do watches though, thank god!

FCDs don't get sick, and even if you find them in your drawer upside down... they're still worth the same :D

Wow, that ain't just a salt tank.
That's a coral reef tank which is an order of magnitude more expense and work to maintain than just a salt water tank with fish.

Gorgeous!!!!
Did you do all the work or pay someone?

My Ex had one and I'd spend hours in front of it as if it were a TV set.
I think he dropped $5000 and constantly complained he couldn't afford the "good" lights or the "good" filters.
He spent every spare moment working on it and constantly complained he wished he had more time.
He eventually told me it's the reef tank or him.
He decided to keep living so he gave up the tank.

Heaven help you if you've really go the collector (or is it acquisition?) bug! I get into collecting phases from time to time - e-bay is my biggest enabler - but they tend to peter out before I get into too much trouble. My most recent phase left me with far more vintage watches that I need. Fortunately I did end up with a few that I really like and hope to pass down to the next generation.

BTW I'm not saying there's anything wrong with collecting - but for me personally, it's too easy to get carried away.

i have a couple of inexpensive Dainichi showas. i had two Sakai fish in the mud last spring and both MIA during harvest. this yr i got two more Sakai fish in the mud will see if they show up in Oct.

Kenny---It was really really amazing. That picture isn't even when it was at its best.

He did all of the work himself, never had any help from anybody. It was a very very time consuming hobby!

We too, would often stand in front of the tank for a really long time and just stare at it.
I don't even think I could give an estimate as to how much money he put into that tank...

Touché, touché Tristan  "Worth" is subjective, we buy objects, like diamonds, and we get great pleasure from them, they hold a $ value. We also buy experiences, like trips or fine dining, with nothing left at the end of it but fond memories, finite moments that have come and gone but have "worth"...this is how I enjoy koi.... Afterall, one day we'll be belly up too, balance is everything, we can't take our rocks with us..more's the pity!
I did have a friend who lost all his koi, over $1M worth, his grandson dumped a bag of raisins in his pond; killed the lot. Koi he'd had for over 30 years. He never once mentioned the financial loss, but man was he devastated...poor sod.

Have you been over to Niigata?

My dad was really into salt water tanks as well. He traveled a lot for work and recently got a transfer and had to take it down bit by bit and sell it. It was pretty sad for him but this isn't the first time and I'm sure he'll be doing it again when he's got a more long term spot. He had quite a few fish in there and also was a photography enthusiast and loved to take photos of his tank.

I'll start with an earlier picture (this is actually after some growth, they all started out super tiny). He was always saying the same things about his lights but he had super crazy filter system. No clue how he kept up with it and he almost lost the tank during hurricane Ike when the power was out. Thankfully had a backup battery system and his power wasn't out long otherwise it wouldn't have been good.
