Did I buy a Diamond with problems for durability?

Hello Guys,

I am a newbie here, looking for opinions on a diamond I have paid a deposit.

The diamond looks good to me in appearance, but my concern is that there is a cavity, which may be a (big?) risk of diamond chipping.

It costs me around USD 9000 so I hope this diamond is not too bad but if so please let me know.

A cavity is defined as "An angular opening created when part of a feather breaks away or when a surface-reaching crystal drops out or is forced out during polishing" by GIA. The one is this diamond should not be a durability issue, but it also will be visible. Cavities accumulates dirt and stuff and will therefore appear darker over time (they are not actually darker, they get filled with dirt/oil like a pothole). VS2 cavities are less of an issue, as they are generally smaller. SI1 and 2 need to be reviewed by a gemologist for this issue of being a potential dirt/oil magnet.

The price you paid is very good given the high color. But, I would assume dirt catching may be an issue.

It is small and on the pavilion, its not a large durability risk, it might reflect into the diamond and become eye visible from the top when filled with gunk but it is unlikely.
The plot is not showing a feather around it so most likely it was a knot that the crystal fell out.

I also think the dirt/oil catching will be an issue but the salesperson said that 'it would not be difficult to clean & the cavity is located in the lower half of the diamond so I dont need to be worried'.

Finally, I surrendered to the price which seems good to me.

An ultrasonic cleaner isn’t expensive and you could just pop it in weekly to clean and also not wear when applying hand lotions or cooking to help keep it cleaner.

On the crown yes it would be a problem.
On the pavilion less so but without looking at it I cant say totally no but there is a good chance it would never cause an issue.

An ultrasonic will be a good investment. You'll want to use blue dawn to cut any grease and hot water, I don't find the commonly recommended "Blitz" are effective. So, I switch between Blitz and Dawn. Ultrasonic cleaners can be a problem for pave-set diamonds, so consider your setting carefully (and as importantly, who makes that setting). Also, it you intend to pair it with other gemstones, you'll need to avoid stones like opal, onyx, emerald, pearls, lapis lazuli, turquoise, amber, coral, tanzanite and some others. You also want to avoid placing color-enhanced stones in the ultrasonic. Other than emerald and tanzanite, none of these are common in erings, so likely not an issue. I also clean eyeglasses, reading glasses and other items in my ultrasonic.
