I''ve done lots of research so I''d like to see what the diamond district has to offer. However, I keep seeing comments from people not to show at street level stores - that the good places are upstairs. Is this really true? I''ve never been to the diamond district before so I don''t know how its laid out. Places that come recommended (such as ERD, David S Diamonds etc.), are these places all located upstairs?

I would say that it is quite the opposite Samara. The ones closer to 6th ave and most of the ones that ask you to go upstairs are generally the ones where you might get ripped off or whom resort to some shady tactics(not all of them, that's just been my experience with the few I've been to). Most of the jewelers that have shops upstairs are also located on that side of the block. I would personally stay away from that side.

The closer you get to 5th ave, the better. However, get too close and the deals aren't as great. Perhaps the jeweler's rent is higher as one gets closer to that prime location(5th ave), I really don't know? My advice to you would be to find a street level jeweler around the center of 47th street. Here is where you'll find the best deals with salespeople that don't stoop to low sales/pressure tactics. If you feel pressured by any jeweler, don't be afraid to keep on walking.
