Diasterism is the phenomenon that produces a star in a stone by transmitted light as opposed to Epiasterism which produces a star by reflected light. For instance in star sapphires.

Just a quick question - does it need a strong light source to exhibit a star?

Yes, like all stones showing asterism the light source has to be distinct and from a single source, a single light bulb will do. Diffused light and many combined light sources do not show star stones at their best.
