Hello all! Looking for your opinion and assistance!

For our anniversary my husband is letting me upgrade my setting and band :) I will be having my diamond which is .9 set into this new setting. The setting is made for a 1.4 carat but I was told it should work. I’m thinking the gap between the diamond and halo will be fine for a few years as I’m hoping upgrade my actual diamond sometime later.. just interested in everyone’s opinion thank you!!!!

The 'gap' / airline is an intended feature of many designs of any size

Any pics?

There are thousands of halo's in the market and using a setting not designed for a stone's size has technical issues. A 1.47 is around 7.41 mm
0.9 is 6.24 mm

That's 1.41 mm difference. That is not a minor difference in ring sizing. In may work or look really odd.

An intentional airline and a poorly fitting halo are not the same thing.

I would not buy a setting that was by made for a much larger stone.

It would end up looking something similar to these. Some people call it a "floating halo" but imho it looks like a poorly executed reset.

ditto the above, i don't care so much for the airline gap :knockout:. If you intend to upgrade your stone down the road, why not upgrade your band now and hold off on the setting. upgrade the stone and setting together. If you still want a halo, you will have a setting that actually fits the stone.

Thank you all so much for the info and advice! I have to have my wedding band resized anyway so I think I’m going to go back into the store where we purchased everything years and years ago. I know they’re probably over priced but with the trade-in policy and the fact that we have everything there I feel like my options are limited. Every six months when I go in to have my rings cleaned and inspected I see things I like but this setting is just absolutely my most favorite setting I’ve seen. And three years I will be graduating as a nurse practitioner specializing in psychiatry and our income will be 200,000 much much more than Then what we make now. So I’m thinking if I can see the .9 in the setting and it doesn’t look too bad I can wait three years and hopefully get a one and a half carat later :-)

010.JPG My OEC is in a temporary halo that is too big. There is a gap and I would like to re-set it. When I see settings with intentional airlines they look IMHO better than my ring does. I still enjoy the ring though and find it looks much worse in pictures than what I see with my eyes. I included a pic for you.

.

I definitely could wait but I feel like I might not see this particular setting three years from now and I just feel so excited as I feel like it’s the prettiest one in my opinion I’ve seen . There might even be a chance for me to upgrade my diamond next summer too. If I am able to stop by and have my band resized after work today I will post pictures if they are able to please a .9 in that setting that way I can get a better feel of what it would look like. I should’ve done that the other day when I was there but I was in a hurry ... I could spend all day looking at diamonds though haha! Thank you everyone for listening!

I can see what you mean, but I still think it’s absolutely beautiful! In general we sit and stare at our rings up close all day long but to the General Public they don’t see the smaller details and I’m sure that huge beautiful ring is blinding in real life!

I am realizing that most rings with distant halos have their center stones bezeled ... Except AoP (below).

The 'airlines' of Pricescope rings are relatively very small gaps.

If using a too large halo off the rack means putting a peghead with the diamond inside it, I'd be worried for the looks & the frame of diamonds surviving, since its maker expected its shape to be supported by a fitted diamond, etc. Maybe it can work - but ... you are more right than I was: "An intentional airline and a poorly fitting halo are not the same thing."

Footnote

On a rush, I only managed to find a couple of examples of Art Deco rings in which gaps are used to highlight the design. I am not seeing new ones - only 1890-1920s work. AoP ring reminds something Cartier put out lately - not very hystorical, but there was a target ring with gaps from AoP ... which I am not finding fast.

- a textbook token of the type, with a marquise WWW & AoP double-halo with gap WWW (another model had the center simply bezeled & two halos both set a distance from their content - loved that one !)

- round in square WWW & AoP round-in-something WWW

- round in round WWW (consider the position of the center stone - it is the most typical construction IHMO, disregard the REST)

- this, takes the idea of contrasting empty space rather further WWW

Take some pictures of the setting. In 3 years you can have it custom made for you. There are some amazing benches out there that will make your dream ring.

Find out who makes it. In three years you can get it.

You have gotten some good advice here. If it was me, I'd get a larger stone and set it in a plain but beautiful solitaire. And in three years, when your income is higher, get the setting and again increase the size of your stone.

Sounds like you want a change. How about a blingy diamond band? Or a colored stone band?

I don't like the air line. I think over time it would really bother me. It makes the diamond look too small.
