My gf likes a particular vera wang thin micropave ring with 4 prongs for the center stone. The tops of each prong are mounted with small diamonds as well. Has anybody had any experience with diamond tipped prongs? I had heard from one jeweler that this wasn''t a practical setting because of the ease with which the little diamonds could be dislodged/damaged. But my gf really likes the look of those little diamonds around the center stone and I want to make her happy!! I''m a bit worried about it.

Any opinions?? Thank you!

Michael B has them also on some of his settings, personally I don't like them at all, I am not a fan of how they 'distract' from the diamond itself, in person they are not even super sparkly so it doesn't add anything great IMO...in terms of practical, not sure...but if the store you buy from will replace them if they fall out I guess it wouldn't be a big deal if she really wants them....get em!

Check out Albiocca''s beautiful ring and her thread here. She has a Vera Wang setting with diamond tipped prongs and it''s beautiful.

I at first (looking at pictures) was like Mara and very opposed to diamond tipped prongs, but when I saw the Vera Wang setting (the same one your gf is interested in!) I fell in looove! They are, in reality, so tiny that they really DO NOT detract from the center stone at all! In fact, when I see regular rings now, I sort of feel like the PRONGS detract from the center stone, b/c you see little not-so-sparkly patches on the top of the super sparkly diamond! I have only had my ring for less than 2 months now, but it seems SOOOOO solid and well made, I very much don''t think stones falling out is going to be a problem. (And yes, I was panicking about this beforehand too, after reading all the horror stories! Keep your fingers crossed for me!)

In any case, GOOD LUCK and I VERY VERY VERY HIGHLY recommend my setting!!!!!

In my experience the greatest majority of people find the diamond prongs gorgeous. Also, lots of experience with the durability of the diamond prongs and no problems here also. It''s all in how they are set that makes the difference.

Thank you albicocca!!! Your ring looks absolutely fantastic! I will forge on!

YAY! That makes me so happy!

What kind of center stone are you thinking of putting in it?

I reeeally hope you get it and post pictures for us so I can see my setting''s little sister!

albi...in pictures i thought they looked pretty, but then in person on the MB setting that i tried on, was not impressed AT ALL and they weren't even sparkly.

my girlfriend who was there with me was like what are those dots on the prongs...hehehee.

just my own thoughts, and i have certainly never been a 'majority rules' type person.

Hehe, well I''m going to point out that mine is Vera Wang, so maybe the Vera Wang ones are a little bigger/sparklier than the Michael B''s?

Also aren''t the Michael B''s not round? I thought they were sort of marquise-ish from some picture I remember...maybe that''s the difference?

I''m not sure if you can still buy Daniel K settings on their own but he has one very similar to the vera wang. It''s probably much expensive though.

hmm i think the ones on the one i tried on were round, albi...maybe it was an anomaly but i was secretly disappointed after thinking originally WOW diamond tipped prongs sounds SOOO decadent..hehe.

Sometimes oils in the skin can mute the sparkle of a diamonds. You should try them on holding the ring by the sides. Had to be that for Michael B uses VVS EF ideal cuts. Can''t figure out what you saw. Are you sure it was Michael B not some knock off?

i didn't touch the tips of the prongs with my fingers...and the store was joe escobar, so unless they sell MB knockoffs, which they don't since they are a MB retailer...then it was the real thing. don't know what it was, but neither me nor my friend were impressed by the diamond prongs at all. we liked the setting itself but not the prongs. guess we are in the minority of those NOT impressed by the MB diamond tipped prongs.

not like it really matters since the greatest majority apparently loves them.

I saw my first diamond prongs in real life recently and was disappointed as well. It was on someone''s hand so I am not sure what designer it was but both FI and I thought it looked strange and distracting. I guess I just like more delicate prongs. Everyone has different taste.

Albi, I am not trying to offend you just giving my honest opinion.

Bandley, I do think that if that is what your FI wants you should go for it!

tacori makes a good point, albi girl, i love your ring.... but just in general as tacori says ... different tastes. there don't have to be oils on the diamonds or it doesn't have to be a knockoff to NOT BE LIKED. it's just personal preference.

agreed. i don''t like the diamond tipped prongs either, but obviously some people do. that''s why we have a choice! best of luck to you bandley!

Bandley, if your gf loves the look then you should get it. I think if you are going with a reputable designer or even a high quality custom job you will not have security issues that would not all ready be present. She shouldn''t do things that will cause her to be extremely hard on her ring where it will get knocked around.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments! I''m getting the ring!

Congrats! I''d ask about replacement of the melee at the store where you buy it, aka what their policy is just so you are aware ''just in case''...we can''t wait to see pictures!

I love the diamond-tipped prongs in pictures, but I''ve never seen them in person. Bandley, don''t forget to post pictures!

Does anyone know how large a center stone would have to be in order for the diamond tips not to overwhelm the stone?

if your girlfriend likes it, you are doing absolutely the right thing! she will be so happy. good luck.
