Hey.

Backstory (feel free to skip)
Looking for diamond studs. Started off with 0.9 ctw+ from bluenile, but then got worried about buying blind. Contacted IDJ for help, and although very friendly, almost 3 weeks later they still hadn't found anything worth showing me. Meanwhile I had diamond fever and was researching every day. Ended up deciding on getting slightly smaller (0.8 ctw+) ACA diamonds from Whiteflash, just to be sure I got something nice. After decision was made, I was really feeling the super ideal cut and the H&A pattern. I figured that since my wifes ideal studs are probably around 2 ctw (ie I won't get close regardless), I rather go for quality and then we can add jackets later when they feel small (I don't think we can ever afford/justify 2 ctw).

I told IDJ that I had found other diamonds, but shortly after (before I could reserve them), one sold. As I was already in correspondence with whiteflash, they suggested a different diamond match (new diamond not on site yet). Meanwhile, IDJ came back with 2 pair of matched diamonds. So I feel a bit bad now by involving 2 retailers, but it is what it is and it was not my intention. I'm gonna try and get it sorted ASAP as to not waste any more of their time. So at this stage, I'm waiting for photos/aset from whiteflash for second diamond, and I'm waiting for photos from IDJ for both pairs. I DO have the reports, so I've got the ASET from the reports (computer generated?). I figured I'd create this thread right away to not waste time (and I'll fill in missing details when I get them!).

Diamond pair 1
0.811 ctw, I, VS2, AGS000, $1550 plus shipping. Both under 2 on HCA. Cons: They look a bit wonky now that I've gotten used to ACA. One rated "very good" on fire and scintillation instead of excellent on HCA tool. Retailer doesn't sell preferred setting. Pros: Cheapest. I color.

Diamond pair 2
0.864 ctw, I, VS2, AGS000, $1775 plus shipping. Both under 2 on HCA. Cons: Most expensive (although not by much, pending shipping cost). Not perfect pattern. Retailer doesn't sell preferred setting. Pros: Biggest. Almost perfect pattern. I color.

Diamond pair 3
0.824 ctw, J, VS2, AGS000, A-cut-above. $1762 including shipping. Both under 2 on HCA. Cons: J color. Pros: Best pattern and obviously passed whatever additional ACA requirements they have. Retailer sells preferred setting.

My thoughts
They are all better cut than I was planning. Had you asked me a month ago, I would have said that I didn't need a super ideal cut with a perfect H&A pattern. But the longer I obsess, the more I want it to be perfect. Technically all of these diamonds are obviously well cut, and they are obviously for my Wife and not for me :P That said, I'm feeling the ACA pull as they certainly looks the best cut so far. But again, I've never seen any diamonds similar to this quality in real life as no stores here sells them, so maybe in real life (even if looking closely), there's not much difference. Would be nice to see the arrow pattern well defined though if looking at them closely.

Had the color been the same, I would have picked the more strictly rated ACA diamonds, but since the other diamonds are a color grade above, it makes me hesitant. Am I being silly for not going for the I color ones? Color is something I was worried about to begin with (but again, having not had exposure IRL, it's very hard to know).

Another thing to consider is that after deciding to go with whiteflash, I've been looking at their settings and picked one that I liked (the 8 prong martini). With IDJ, I would have to go with 3 prong martini as that looks to be the only style they sell. I'm OK with that I suppose, I was sort of on the fence, but it's always hard when you make a decision and it's then taken away.

Any thoughts and input would be much appreciated as it's very useful to discuss these things and hopefully it will get me closer to a decision so that I can tell retailers ASAP after receiving the images (don't think I've ever been this indecisive before!).

ACA's for me. If they sell your preferred setting, it makes sense to me to go with them.

Have you considered the trade-in policy? Not sure what IDJs is but I know WF has an extremely good trade in policy. Could be important since
your wife might enjoy 2 ctw (some day). People tend to slowly work their way up to their ideal weight. I prefer ACA stones if in the budget so that
would be my vote.

Have you considered the trade-in policy?
Unlikely to be a factor as we live in Australia and it's too much of a hassle with import fees etc.

Tough call but J is too warm for me....I'd want one of the I color pairs. They're still AGS certified and I really don't think there'd be a perceivable difference in performance. I'm sure IDJ would offer an upgrade policy but that is worth verifying.

WF, ACA no question. And their upgrade policy has remained consistent and the most flexible.

WF, ACA no question.
Can you expand on why (excluding upgrade policy)? Do you think the slight difference in cut can be noticed more than the downgrade on color? Or are you just like me and want it perfect, just because (ie OCD)? :)

I am OCD. So deep inside, it bugs me to go with x when I know y is better. Personally, I've seen ACAs and my own (old) GIA 3x with great specs. I can see the difference. With looking at an earring, I don't think you can tell the difference in color clearly between I and J when the J is so well cut. And honestly, given that you are aware that your wife would someday like 2 ctw studs, I would bet money that you will upgrade these for her at some point in the future.:clap: in advance. So if your wife wanted to go higher in color, you guys can make that happen on the next upgrade. And it is very hard (for me) not to love that WF cuts their own stones. Total quality control to specific standards. Again. OCD. Not culling through a gazillion stones cut in various countries looking for the few that achieve those parameters, and then still not being that exact. Again. OCD.

Diamond pair 3

Got images for second diamond. Looks like a good match to my untrained eyes. Thoughts?
(ignore any visual size differences in the actual photos, it's just a quick paint job to try easier compare them side by side).

Wow, spectacular cut on both of them. Love the ASET images on these 41.2 pointers!

Should I be worried about the red patch in middle of second diamond? On the certificate, there looks to be a feather matching the pattern (on the underside). Might be complete coincident.

I've asked wf the same, ie whether it affects diamond being eye clean, so we'll see what they say when the diamond arrives from lab.

Edit: looks like I attached photo twice in post above, sorry. Can't edit it anymore.

I am certain the J pair are eyeclean at VS2 in that size. I prefer ACAs as that is what I have, but I would not choose 8 prong settings on that size stone. You'll have prongs covering too much of the diamonds. I'd go with 3 or 4 prongs max on stones under a carat. I think prongs should be as invisible as possible so that you mainly see a diamond.

Yes, I don't want the setting to be a feature as I want the diamonds to be the stars, but I don't like the 4 prong. And a lot of people don't seem to like the 3 prong martini as it can dig in etc. If you look at my other thread, vrbeauty posted a photo of her studs using this same setting and her diamonds were only half of my carat weight. Do you think it looks overpowering? Hard to see on just 1 photo, but looked fine to me.

It's all a matter of personal preference. I just don't like that much metal showing on a small diamond.

What did you choose? So many good choices!

(I agree w/ DS in terms of prongs on smaller stones. I have 4 prong martinis - there are really endless combinations of options, and often the vendor has more setting styles available than what they might show on their site)

I got the ACA with 3 prong martini. Haven't updated because I thought I'd wait until they arrived. I really liked the 8 prong, but in the end it was too risky (I know she doesn't like lots of metal showing etc).

Can't wait for glamour shots and ear shots!! Congrats!
