Hi everyone :)

I'm a newbie here and love this forum! It's so informative and the posters are so helpful and knowledgeable about jewelry. I'm thinking of purchasing some diamond studs in the near future and I was wondering if going to a J-K color would be noticeable for .75 carats in each stud. From what I've read (please correct me if I'm wrong), cut and size take precedence over color.

I was thinking along these parameters for the diamond studs:
approximately .75 each
J-K color
SI1
Excellent cut

My budget for the earrings would be around $3500 (can go up to $4000 by not eating for a month! LOL) including the 4 prong platinum setting and taxes.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :) I'm looking to purchase the studs for my bday on August!
 
For me personally, I would totally go with the range that you're thinking. As long as you stick with stones that are excellent/ideal cut, you'll get tons of sparkle and can go lower in other categories. I think studs are a great piece of jewelry because you have more wiggle room in the specs since they will (obviously) be on your ears and not scrutinized like a diamond on your hand would be. You can't exactly pull your lobes to your eyes to stare at the studs all day :lol:

I color is about the lowest you'll go without seeing much tint. All I can tell you is that you probably have to see some to know how you feel. I know that Phoenix (a member here) has an H color diamond ring and she tried J color studs for awhile but is now trying to trade for a higher color.

If my budget was $3500, I would probably get the largest I color excellent/ideal cut ones that I could find. But if you are open to warmer, I'd go with J.

You can get .70 J SI1 GIA Excellent cut stones for around your budget.

You'll by far do better online than shopping locally. Most studs in jewelry stores are not certified, so you have no idea of what you are getting. I made that mistake once, but no more!
 
I'll see how much bigger a K is compared to an I. If it's neglible, then I'd just go for the I :) I want them extra extra sparkly!
 
I have a 0.72 and 0.73 stud - one is a J and one an I. I can't tell which and they are both very white. There are pics in Show Me the Bling.

Hi diamondseeker2006 :) if I get a bezel setting for the studs, will they appear "whiter" if they are a J? I did some diamond and setting hunting and b2c jewels have the most reasonable prices only for what I have searched. Thanks!
 
No, I don't think a white gold bezel setting will make a J look whiter. But I think it will be fine. Just stick with excellent cut and ask B2C for magnified images and idealscope images of the stones you are considering and post here for input. You might even want to post prospects here before you narrow your choices down.
 
Ok, will do! I've been saving up for them little by little each month... but I don't think I can wait till August to buy them :rolleyes:

I have I colored studs that I absolutely love:


You may want to look into I-J colored studs w/ fluorescence as another option, as long as they are not milky in appearance.

I bought a pair of J colored studs a couple of weeks ago from James Allen. They both are GIA 3X and one of them is a H&A. They face up really white and sparkle like crazy. I love them.
 
Went shopping for studs yesterday at IDJ. I could not tell the difference between I and J for ideal cut 1ct stones. The sparkle hides the color pretty well. When I put them next to my F eternity ring, I can see the color but when I put them in ears, they face up white to me.
 
I have J color BGD Signature AGS studs and they face up beautifully white & sparkly. Very happy with them :))
 
I am in the process of buying similar studs from JA. I went with J colored stones because I think it is a nice compromise between facing up white and getting a bit more size. No one I know is going to scrutenize them to the point that they will be able to see any color when I where them. I also went with ideal cuts, SI1-SI2 clarity and 1.42tcw. I will post my pics when I get them in. Good luck!
 
Oooh thanks everyone!!! I'm so excited... just a bit more saving and I'll revive this thread again with a clamor for help LOL :)

Just torn between settings - I like the 4 prong setting coz it's a classic and I like the bezel setting because it will make the diamond look bigger... can I just win the lottery and have both? :loopy:

Have you tried on bezel settings with that stone size? I took the advice of this forum to get cheapie studs in different settings and wear them to see what works best for me. It's obv a matter of personal preference but I thought bezels were too bulky. If you want to maximize the bling, jackets might be an option for more flexibility.
 
I just tried looking at the bezel setting on the b2c jewels website. I guess it won't be an exact representation of what I'm going to get... I'll try looking at some jewelry shops in my area and see what I prefer :)
 
If you want to optimize your size go for martini I had basket for a long time and i am loving my two week old martini set studs. the bezel in my opinion hides the fire from the sides of the stones
 
If you think you might want jackets, then 4 prongs (whether basket or martini) will look better in jackets, in my opinion.
