Hi All,

Been thinking about getting some studs off and on for the better part of two years. Just got a new job (big step up) and decided that I've earned it!
Not looking for anything big or flashy, just good every day wear 0.60-0.70 tcw. Going to go Ideal for Cut/Polish/Symmetry, J-K for color, SI1-ish (maybe SI2 if eye clean, but really these little guys will not be that big to notice anything). That way it’s a smaller dollar amount and I will not feel guilty down the road when I get their bigger sisters, :halo:

Going to go with Brian Gavin for a Milgrain Bezel setting.

Questions I have that I need your thoughts on:

• Traditional Cut or AVR? - I love AVR and someday when I get my engagement ring upgrade I’m going AVR all the way (even purchased a cubic zirconia in the approx. size to look at and wear around to get an idea of what it would look/feel like….yes, I’m that neurotic). But these guys are small, will I really feel a difference? It’s a $150-$200 premium per stone for AVR. For a center piece like an engagement ring that you can really see the detail it makes sense, but for these small studs I’m on the fence. An example of a bigger pair of AVR in a bezel can be found here https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/gog-avr-bgd-bezel-milgrain-puddle-of-love.157256/

• Bezel – I’ve always really liked this ring https://www.pricescope.com/communit...-oec-in-an-18k-rose-gold-bezel-by-erd.194098/ since it hit PS a couple of years ago, simple, elegant, bezel love. What draws me in is the double bezel, inside sitting next to the diamond is bezeled, then another circle of smooth metal. Is this ridiculous for Bezel Stud in the size of diamonds I’m looking at? Is there a downside to doing this? Am I better just sticking with the BG classic milgrain bezel? Will adding more metal take away from the diamond in this size. I like the idea of tricking the eye to make them feel bigger than they are, but I don't want them to feel out of proportion either.

• Metal – White gold or Platinum? My engagement ring is Platinum. I’m not married to one metal over the other. I don’t like the idea of having to get an item re-plated. I wouldn’t be adverse to unplaited white gold.

• Backs – I think La Pousette are the only real option. Tension backs are out of the question, I am just to rough on them, and reading about screw backs make me unconvinced. I want something that is very secure, if I go to sleep in these it will not be the end of the world and they will be on just as securely in the morning.

What else am I overlooking/should be considering?

Thanks!

I would go with MRB for studs. More sparkle. Avr for ering sounds fab. I would go with platinum but that is just personal choice. Unplated sounds practical too.

I think AVRs in that size will be hard to distinguish, but if it makes you happy to own AVR earrings, I say go for it. It's a bit of cost, but isn't all jewelry a luxury? :cheeky: An idea: order up the AVRs and see them in person before sending them to get set. If they seem too small, you can return and go with some amazing BGD round brilliants.

As for the bezel settings, I also love the setting you posted and hope to put my OEC into a very similar ring setting someday. I think the outer bezel being smooth and the inner bezel being milgrained is such a lovely detail. I am not sure if you'd really notice it much on your ears, though. I think the milgrain settings will be lovely. I have the regular BGD bezel settings and they are really perfection in earring form: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond-earrings/studs/handmade-bezel-studs-18k-white-gold-5409w18

I also have to say that the tension backs are extremely secure/tight. I was surprised how tight they were when I first got them, and I got them pre-loved. There are a couple "clicks" before they go on and off, and they don't move at all on my ears.

As for metal, earrings don't take as much beating as rings do with hand-washing, so I wouldn't be concerned about white gold being not white, but the detail of unplated white gold could also be really lovely.

Thank you for the input. I think I'll go with MRB for these guys, save the cash for another project.

I'll discuss with BG about the bezel setting and see what they say that for this size of studs.
