I'm getting a pair of 1cctw studs from IDJ and I'm trying to decide between screw backs or tension backs. I have kind of fat ear lobes, so not too sure what would be best? Oh and martini or 4 prong?
There are a bunch of threads debating this issue (you can search for them), but it seems like most people prefer friction (tension) backs, because they are easier to remove. The threads on screwbacks can be worn down through removal, it's harder to put them on, the posts are generally thicker, and they can sometimes unwind themselves during activities like hairbrushing.
I chose friction backs for my studs. They are 1ctw too.
I think the 4 prong vs 3 prong setting is personal preference too. I prefer martini settings because I like the way they sit on the ear better than baskets.
Tension backs!
The pair that I have from IDJ are set in nice and sturdy baskets, and require quite a pull to get the backs off, so they are definitely secure enough.
OH oh...I have screw backs, I am an exception, got a pair of 1.5, just didn't want them to fall off. Easy on/off & comfortable for me anyway, also went with 4 prong.
Too Much Information:
My screw-backs tear up my ears. I hate to wear them because the posts are slightly bigger than the holes in my ears, and with threads the posts don't slide. I also hate sitting screwing the darn things on & off. Also, they come unscrewed during the day---I can't imagine how/why that happens.
Another thing is that a tension might pop off if the earring gets caught in a major way - bad for losing the earring, but good for not tearing your lobe. I had a friend who was skiing, got her glove caught on her earring and had to have a couple of stitches.
I guess it may depend on the diamond cut themselves.
Personally I have princess cuts and the square basket setting just sets it off nicely. I have not seen any princesses in martinis and am sure it works well but i fell in love with the princesses in the square baskets, so that is what i got.
I have screw backs and love it. I wear mine 24/7. No issues with sleeping in with them... um maybe for the first day or so, compared to my other cz which were tension set. It may take a bit longer to take off and on when cleaning them (every other week), but because i have them in 24/7 it really isnt an issue of taking them off and putting them back on. They can loosen a over the course of the week and i just tighten them back up again.
