Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and school

Hi all,

I'm new here. My wife turns 30 on May 10th and she finishes her grad school program to be a Nurse Practitioner. She doesn't own any real diamond earrings and I though it would be nice to get her some diamond studs.

As far as size, I'm thinking .75 - 1.0 CTW for the earrings. When I got her engagement ring, I went for a .90 Round, D, SI2, Triple Excellent GIA certified stone. The stone was about $4500. (Did I do ok with this stone? It looks absolutely beautiful to me.)

I don't know what specs to go for on earrings to get the best bang for your buck. With the engagement ring, I was only willing to sacrifice on the clarity as long as I couldn't see the inclusions without using a loupe. I saw many SI2 stones and there can be a huge difference from one SI2 stone to the next as far as what I can see.

Are there some general guidelines for earrings? I was looking at going through BlueNile as I've good things about them and the prices beat any local jeweler.

Any help is much appreciated!

Any of the recommended / favourite PS vendors can create beautiful stones- specify your budget and criteria and they will work their magic,

I have found that the easiest place to match earrings is WF because their stones are all pretty much cut to the same standards making it very easy to get a good match. I think up to 1 ctw is great to go with the size of her e-ring. You can get individual stones that can be upgraded, or you can get preset ones that cost a little less that cannot be upgraded. What is your budget?

These are the preset ones (and available with other settings):

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

Congrats to your wife on her graduation. What a lovely idea. Studs are great and down the road your wife can always get jackets to dress up the studs for special occasions. This option makes studs very versatile. All of the suggested vendors have good reputations. I have purchased several pieces from IDJ. I don't know where the other vendors are located but if you live in or near NYC you can easily go down to IDJ yourself (I think maybe JA as well) and see the diamonds they have available in person.

Thank you all for your wonderful thoughtful responses. I've been away from the computer for the day so I wasn't able to respond until now. I am quickly responding now and will look at your suggestions. :)

I would like to spend less than $1500 I guess. I really want GIA certified stones. That makes me feel better about knowing the quality of what I am buying. I am looking at WF now.

I learned sooooo much from buying her engagement ring. The first ring I bought, I don't feel I knew what I was getting into. I bought a ring from Michael Hill jewelers with noncertified stones already set in the ring. I ended up returning the first ring and picked settings and certified stones to go with it. I guess what I'm saying, is I didn't have set budget on the ring as I didn't know what price to pay for the quality I wanted.

If $1500 or less can get me a nice set of .75-1.0 CTW diamond stud earrings, then I'll go for it. If that gets me crap, then I'd rather wait until I have that much money earmarked.

Since you want it with papers, why not purchase those ideal ones from a vendor that has an upgrade policy? That way you can maybe get her a bombtastic, GLOWING set that might be smaller than you intended but perfect in every sense? Then you can upgrade at a later life event. First year on the job upgrade? Any 'landmark'-y anniversaries (wedding? since dating)?

This pair would come up to $1536 total if you bank wired the payment. They're both 0.32 G SI2 GIA excellent stunners with GOG's lifetime upgrade policy. But that's of course without the cost of the studs to hold those diamonds in.

Thank you madelise! Those diamonds you listed look great. I never knew this kind of information was available and now I am trying to understand what I'm looking at.

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

So I've looked at several of the sites that have been mentioned. I just pulled a listing from BlueNile, just as an example. I am still looking at the other sites. It's so much information which is great and overwhelming at the same time.

How would you judge something like this set? http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-...EP&builder=BYOE&pid=LD01577988&pid=LD02460155

I wouldn't go with BlueNile.

Have you checked out this list? http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/brians_matched_pairs/. They're all AGS Ideal cut matched pairs, so you're getting the cream of the crop of cuts. And they also have a lifetime upgrade policy.

a 0.6 ctw won't be too obviously smaller than your 0.75 minimum original, hoped for size. Their stud settings are $175. So if you want to spend max $1500, you still have a good sized selection to choose from! And really, that size is great for daily wear. They'll be 4.3mm each.

If you were planning for $1500 just for the diamonds, I'd go for the 0.41 pair of I's. It's over budget by just $71. That's just not going out to one dinner :twirl: Then you hit your "size goal" and get a pair of 0.83ctw studs!

Call ID Jewelry and talk to Yekutiel. Tell him PS sent you. And you want excellent cut eyeclean studs for 1500--- largest your budget gets you in I/J color GIA. He'll find you something amazing I'm sure.

Yep - ditto this. He found me absolutely gorgeous GIA certed studs that were much bigger than I thought I could get for my budget ... and even humored my idiosyncratic desire for strong fluorescence in both stones (I'm a weirdo collector, and always wanted that quality). V. nice dealers, too. :)

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

Hi all,

I'm still looking for earrings. I've kind of been thrown a curve ball from a jeweler I purchased my wife's wedding band from. (I will start a second thread about that.)

When I went to get my wife's wedding band, I asked about diamond stud earrings. The jeweler didn't have a selection of loose diamonds on hand but showed me earrings from one of the designers she carries. I'm not familiar with the designer and I'm not familiar with the style so I'll share with you guys to see what you think.

The designer is Piero Milano. I searched Pricescope and found one article mentioning them. The style was a diamond cluster stud type earring. She said this was the current trend. I can't find much for this designer online so here is a link to a pair that looks similiar Link.

I'm comfortable with the jeweler because of my experience getting my wedding band from her. The earrings are beautiful and really sparkle. They were priced at $1900 but I got it down to $1600 cash out the door. I can probably do better if I decide I really want them.

I'm not sure what to do. Is this the right direction? Arghhh! Any opinions are more than welcomed. I was set on studs but I'm not sure now.

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

IMO simple studs are a better choice in the long term: with a good upgrade policy you will be able to increase in size if your wife ever feels the need to, and you can also a buy a pair of jackets if she wants more ear coverage at some point.

Also, what is trendy today may be not so trendy anymore tomorrow...classic studs are a safe bet.

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

Classic studs. Can't go wrong with a timeless classic - they can be dressy or casual. You can also add a jacket to them later on (there has been a jacket flurry lately - lots of threads on them!) or a dangle could also be added for a different look. Accessories for earrings (who knew?!) but these are things you can gift her with on different occasions... oh.... clever - a future present plan!! :naughty:

A cluster or decorative design is lovely, but sometimes, better quality studs may be the better option.

Glad you trust your jeweller - that's great! - but did you contact Yekutiel at all? It would be worth the phone call - just run it by him to see what your money will get via IDJ.

I haven't contacted Yekutiel at all. I'm new here so I'm moving carefully before I do anything since you never know who/what you could be dealing with online. Yekutiel is probably a great guy. I just need to do my homework. I prefer to get help from those that aren't financially motivated before I start messing with the guys that live and breathe this stuff.

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the title of this post! I literally just did the exact same thing for my wife. She turns 30 at the beginning of June and finishes law school in a couple of weeks. I ended up getting her a pair of 0.84 ctw AGS000 studs at BlueNile. They were both G SI2 AGS000 stones at 0.42 ct each. My budget was pretty much the same as yours and I only went over by a tiny bit (less than the local sales tax I would have paid). I got them in the platinum 3 prong martini setting and they came with free overnight FedEx shipping. I though it was a great price and the stones are gorgeous. I felt very comfortable buying them on BlueNile since I was lucky enough to find that AGS000 pair. BlueNile also offers 6months interest free financing through Bill Me Later if you want/need and a great return policy.

HI:

I recommend getting studs at the outset, and if she likes the cluster "look", another occasion get her some diamnd earring jackets. That way she can dress them up or down. Incidentally ID Jewellery has gorgeous jackets--OR perhaps you could get smaller studs now, and the jackets as well.

BTW here are pictures of how studs look with the earrring jackets on the SMTB forum....

dockman, I'm extremely interested to know more about your purchase. How did you know the stones were AGS000 from the BlueNile website? I'm going to send you a PM just in case you don't see this.

Edit: I see I can't send a PM on this forum. That stinks. I searched and I understand the reasoning. I hope you see this dockman.

HI:

Another thought--"Mother's Day" promo's should be out soon....SO I'd keep my eyes peeled on the following sites: WF, James Allen, BGD, GOG, BN, yannooooo

cheers--Sharon

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

BlueNile has a 10% off for Mother's Day. I'm not sure if it's OK for forum policy to post the code here. The sale doesn't include any of the "build your own" items.

You can definitely sign up for emails from various vendors to see if they have a promotion.

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

I'm using the diamond search tool on Pricescope to find diamonds between .40 and .50 that are AGS 000. BlueNile only has a few of those. What's the best way to find a match for earrings? Is it just as simple as looking at the specs and finding the most closely matched?

Is anyone that's good at this stuff willing to help me find a pair of diamonds for my wife? I've been looking and looking and looking ...and I'm getting overwhelmed with all the choices. I'm TERRIBLE when it comes to making a decision on this stuff. I've increased my budget to 2K and I'd like to get close to 1 ctw round diamonds.

Hi ChiTown. Well, as for knowing that they were AGS000, if you click on "View Details" during the earring pair selection process, it shows you the actual certificates. In my case, they happened to be AGS000 stones. Unfortunately, I don't think you can search for AGS certs, but you can look through each pair to find some that are AGS000. Here's a link to a pair I just found on BlueNile that looks pretty good:

http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-...EP|builder=BYOE|pid=LD02518066|pid=LD02541516

Hopefully that link will work for you. When you view the details, they have links to scanned copies of the actual diamond reports that have the AGS grades and light performance images of the actual diamonds. Most of the pairs are GIA, but a few are AGS. You just have to look for them.

I kept my search criteria to Ideal cut, 0.75 to 1.0 ctw, D-H color and SI1-SI2 clarity and the price range max at $1500. But you can narrow those down even further to find the pair you want. With such a huge selection, its easy to find the right combination. While I was doing that, I found another pair for you:

http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-...EP|builder=BYOE|pid=LD02221728|pid=LD02538250

This link has one AGS000 paired with a GIA Ex-Ex-Ex. If you have questions about the AGS certs you see, you can always post them here and get input from everybody else. I learned a lot the first time around when I was buying my wife's e-ring, so I felt confident in my abilities to pick out a great pair. But feel free to use the expertise of people here to help if you still have questions.

Let me know if you still want more details about my purchase and I'll see if I can help out any more. Good luck!

ETA: I used the BlueNile earring pair selection tool, not the PS tool for finding individual diamonds. BlueNile already pairs them up for you. It looks like opening up your budget to $2k can get you up to 0.9ctw for the diamonds alone, plus at least $250 for the settings. But the difference between a 0.45 ct and 0.5 ct diamond is fairly small, and you can get 0.42 ct each for under your original budget. Just something to think about.

Re: Diamond Stud Earrings for wife's 30th birthday and schoo

One thing to mention if you get them through blue nile, their stud earrings come with screw backs, which I dislike (posts are thicker, you have to screw them on and off each time you put them on, and if you do it incorrectly you strip the threads).

i like the friction back studs MUCH better! so if you get blue nile, I'd switch out the settings to friction back if possible (just as secure, much less fuss).
