Diamond Size--Explanation

Could someone explain why the diamond that I purchased weighs 1.194 and measures: 6.90 - 6.91 x 4.2 mm; however another diamond that weighs 1.20 measures 6.82 - 6.78 x 4.20 mm? Why are my measurements higher. They''re both considered ideal diamonds. Thanks!

Because the 2nd diamond must be deeper. Regarding "they are both supposed to be ideal diamonds", I guess I'd ask "by what definition?"

Since both are the exact same depth, I vote for looking at the girdles. The thicker girdle weighs more.

My bad - I didn't note the depth measurements. Yes, I'd concur about the girdle.

Girdle on 1.194 diamond is 1.0 - 1.4, which I believe is thin to medium and the girdle on 1.20 diamond is slightly thick to thick (no numbers given). So, this causes the difference in overall size? As a result, the thin to medium girdle causes the diamond to be wider and the slightly thick to thick diamond causes that diamond to have more depth? Am I on the right track?

No, the depth is still the same, but the thick girdle has more weight. If you make my head thick, or my feet, the effect on my weight is not as great as when you make by chest and stomach thick, because that is where I am the widest. sigh...

Wait…Let me have a try at this story problem. And first of all, sounds like you got lucky here. The only time I think it’s bad to have bigger spread it when it’s in your rear-end.

Basically, though, I concur with Wink and aljdewey. I think it all boils down to this: Your 1.194-carat (6.90-6.91) diamond is carrying more weight across the crown portion vs. the 1.20-carat diamond (6.78-6.82, which does not have as much spread across the crown as yours) is carrying more weight in it’s mid-section (girdle). Technically, the 1.20-carat weighs more, but doesn’t look as big as yours in terms of spread because it’s hiding more of it’s weight in it’s mid section (I think that is what Wink is eluding to in his self-admitted altered state…harhar!).

I think it’s a good thing (in the immortal words or Martha Stewart). I’m generally clueless though, so you had better wait for another brainiac to reply just to verify.

Are you worried that your diamond doesn't cut the mustard or something?? Lots of diamonds within similar carat weights have slight variances in their diameter dimensions. Personally, I think why not choose the one that’s going to look bigger – even if it’s only by a micrometer!

Also, I should expound that when I say there is more weight in the girdle section, I mean it’s thicker vertically (when you’re looking at a side view vs. face up). But, you probably knew what I meant. I was just clarifying.

You're right because the 1.20 diamond with the smaller measurements did in-fact have a medium to thick girdle whereas mine is a thin to medium girdle....
