I bought a diamond online. It''s shipped and will be arriving today (yes, i''m sitting near the wiindow looking for the UPS truck as I type), and the seller has a very good return policy. That said... if I take it to a local jeweller to have them look at it and tell me whether or not it should be returned, what should I ask?

I just don''t know the questions to ask the jeweler other than "is this a good stone?" Which seems to me a bit unspecific... I see all these numbers and colored pictures and idealscope whatchamacallits but I''m pretty new to the diamond game and don''t know what much of that means. Thoughts?

We have all done that waiting by the door/window, so know what you are going through.

First off, you do NOT want to take the stone to a jeweler for evaluation, this is a job for an independent appraiser. Most jewelers will tell you the stone is not good in order to sell you one of their own. After all, you just purchased from a competitor, what else would you expect them to say?

You can use this link to find an appraiser in your area http://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx An appraiser can evaluate your diamond and will answer any questions, even ones you don't know to ask.

Hi Ajilon

Jet is absolutely right, this is a job for an independant appraiser, not someone who sells jewellery. If you would like opinions on the diamond itself post the report number so we can look up the rest of the info or if you could post the following please;

crown and pavilion angles
star and lower girdle facet percentages

Then we can get a better idea.

GIA Report: 2105224302
Crown Angle: 34.0 degrees
Crown Height: 14.5%
Cavilion angle: 41.8 degrees
Pavilion depth: 44.5%
Star Length: 50%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: THN to MED (2.5%)

there''s the rest of the information.

The pavilion is very steep, you've *most* likely got a leaky diamond.

You can confirm this with IS/ASET images, or you can even buy your own IS if you want to take a look yourself:

I'd pass.

Ditto on the indep. appraisers, too.
Yssie is right, a steep pavilion angle is undesirable because it can cause light leakage and other negative effects, Yssie's suggestion of ordering an Idealscope is a good idea too so you can check it out for yourself when it arrives.

it arrived, which is how i got the rest of the information from the GIA report.

leaky diamond sounds bad. bummer! i''m assuming that means that the diamond will leak light out the bottom or sides as opposed to reflecting it all back out the top?

Yes thats what can happen with a very steep pavilion angle. What do you think of the diamond now you can see it?

phone camera and bad lighting being what they are... here it is.

Bingo.

Try macro and a tripod, if you've got one, for the pics, it makes it much easier

what do i think of it? good question. it''s exciting to actually HAVE the diamond, but questions about its quality temper the feeling. to my eye it looks clean and sparkly. when i went to a jewelry store i was able to see inclusions on the si2 - i3 stones, and am happy to not see anything untoward on this stone, which I''d assumed would be the case with the "vs2". i''d probably be happier if i weren''t being so worried. but if i weren''t worried, or looking at it critically, then i''d be a less informed consumer, which is the antithesis of why i''m at this site.

have to go to work, will be back later and discuss the next steps... this might be just the beginning of finding "the stone"... i can see how this can sometimes turn into a very lengthy process. =) Thank you very much for your informed and considered opinions, all!

Maybe it is just me...what do you think of the black round area under the table? Is this a sign of leakage?

I think I can even see the circle of death in that bad picture. Looks leaky from here. I would pass and let everyone here find you a winner.

Yep. Return the stone if you aren't 100% happy. Give us your budget and check out some of the winners that PSers will recommend.

Just as an example these are pretty close to your specs.

Take a look to see if you can see dark patches or a dark ring around the table of the diamond, look for this in as many different lighting conditions as you can. Also see if you can take a look at some well cut diamonds such as AGS0 Peerless brand from Jareds or Hearts on Fire if there is a seller near you. This will show you what well cut diamonds look like so you can compare yours, also if you ordered an Idealscope that would be very helpful.

If you do some research during the return period and decide you are happy with it then thats the most important thing!

Just saw this photo, it is hard to say for sure as the diamond is too far away but it could be leakage.

okay, well, i have until 1/31/2010 to return, so that should be plenty of time to shop around. in the meantime, i''ll take a closer look and maybe get some better pictures up here.

my intended would like a round diamond (minimum: vs2, f, excellent cut), with a platinum setting. my budget is about $4,500, including the setting. she said that she would like a classic, tiffany-style, 6-prong setting. She had said at first that she wanted "D, IF" and I explained to her that she was paying an incredible carat-premium for quality characteristics she would never see, so she agreed that "colorless, eye-clean" would be fine if it allowed for a slightly larger stone. That''s how I ended up with the stone (.8 vs2 f excellent) posted above.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

Yes, from those photos it is clear the diamond is not as good as you could get for your money and your intended!

Return that puppy and we will help you get a stone that is great!

Yes leakage can be clearly seen, personally I would return it and start over.

Yap, leakage can be clearly seen in the latest photos.
