Generally speaking, which is a more expensive cut, a round solitare or a princess cut?

In *very* general terms, rounds are more expensive for a number of reasons. One big one is the demand for rounds.

Princess cuts retain more of their original weight from the rough material and are therefore less costly per carat. Because the weight retained is usually due to increased depth princess cuts are smaller in diameter, length/width, than equal weight rounds. Round diamonds of the same weight as a princess cut generally are larger in diameter and less deep. From cubic shape rough you can cut a 1.00ct princess cut or maybe a .80/.85ct round. Either stone will cost close to the same amount. That's why princess cuts appear to be such a big "bargain".
