Diamond set too low??

Hi all,

I picked a gorgeous diamond and a gorgeous setting... but I don't like the way the diamond is set in the setting!

It looks to me like the diamond is being swallowed up by the bezel, rather than sitting gracefully above it.

Advice? Thoughts? Am I being crazy?

My boyfriend and I planned the whole design together, but he's going to propose with the ring at some point in the future, so I won't have the opportunity to actually try it on for awhile.

I think there's too much metal -- I'd like the diamond to come right up to the milgrain and not be diamond, metal, milgrain, as shown here:

I think it's a beautiful ring, it is definitely a personal preference though. Have you mentioned it to your bf or to Erica that you were unhappy with the bezel?

Actually I just looked again and I don't think it's the diamond that is sitting too low that is bothering you, the ring you linked that you said you liked when I looked at the profile view the diamond was set just as low if not lower in the bezel, I think it's thick bezel that you do not like. Was this a custom piece?

I know what you're concerned about, but there really are no photos in that bunch that clearly show the bezel height vis a vis the table of the diamond. You haven't yet seen the ring in person, right? I'd suggest you wait for that - even examine it before the proposal, if necessary. Although in theory those close-up pictures magnify everything, they (or maybe it's just our minds?) have a way of distorting perspective somehow.

Hi OECtime!

I've been offline for a few hours and just saw your email, but since you posted a thread before I had a chance to reply, I'll simply respond to you here, and you can email me your thoughts.

I'm bummed you saw the pics! D and I were being purposefully sneaky, so I didn't post them on IG or FB so that you would be surprised - he and I were in cahoots. Shoot - but I guess it's good that you saw it so that we can address your concerns ASAP.

As you know, this was an existing semimount that was a close, but not perfect or custom fit, for the OEC you chose, which we discussed was a smidge too small for the mounting. I personally think that the jeweler did a beautiful job setting it - since we never discussed your expectations in such specific detail, and I'm only seeing the Lang example here for the first time (IMO that stone is set a little too high, though, but it's a personal preference and I definitely see the point you're making), the jeweler used his discretion as to how best to fit your diamond. Usually people prefer for the girdle to be nearly flush with the bezel, versus sitting that high above it. I'm sorry you feel that the setting is "swallowing" the diamond - that is obviously not the look I was going for.

D does already have the ring - he's had it for a couple of weeks now. Macro pics exaggerate everything, so perhaps you can see it in person before we decide on a game plan? You may find that in real life it looks different than you see in the greatly magnified photos.

I of course want you to love your ring! Using the semimount was less expensive than going custom, but I'm more than happy to remove the diamond and we can proceed with a custom design, so that every detail is as you want it (which was the original plan before this semimount walked into our lives). We can find a new home for the mounting - Caysie and I loved it so much that we actually just completed CAD's for a very similar design that I can show you. I can quote you for the difference in price, if that's an option you'd like to pursue.

In the scheme of things this is nothing to panic over - we will figure out how to get the exact ring you want on your finger, so don't fret.

That's the very same mounting, only with a larger diamond popped into it loose. It wasn't set, and the setting had no existing bezel to speak of - one would have to be built for any stone we use in this mounting.

Thank you for your response! I replied to you privately.

I appreciate people's advice about seeing the ring in person. I'm concerned about the amount of metal between the diamond and the start of the milgrain but I do understand that macro pics can distort things.

I know the ring will be perfect in the end!

It's a gorgeous ring and I agree that it might look much different in person. I had some concerns about my ring after seeing images, but once the ring was in hand, I realized that my concerns were invalid - my ring was perfect and I hope that yours is too
