Just got a custom 3 stone ring for my wife. The center stone(2.25ct) sticks out past the prongs on all 4 sides, what looks like to be a bit more than usual. She has complained that the edge of the diamond keeps getting "caught" on the edges of cabinets, counters, ect... Is she at risk of damaging the stone? does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this situation/concern? Here''s a pic. not the exact ring, but just to illistrate what Im talking about.

That doesn''t actually look all that unusual for a 4 prong setting. It might be set a bit high, if it keeps catching on things, or possibly she might just prefer a more low-set sturdy ring (I am a big fan of bezels, myself), but I don''t think you''re in freakishly unstable territory, if your illustration is true to life. I say insure it and enjoy it ....

yap, nothing unusual. Can we have the profile shot, may be it is just to high.

Hi DE

The setting looks fine although the prong at 5 o''clock looks to be uneven. There is the possibility of damaging the diamond if she keeps catching it on countertops and suchlike unfortunately. Maybe lowering the diamond might make a difference but there are no guarantees that would in fact work - could you post a photo of the actual ring? That would give a lot more info.

sorry, guess i want clear enough. That picture is NOT her ring. Just a quick pic so i could show you what i was talking about. we were concerned about that part of the diamond that extends beyond the prongs(beyond the red lines) as they seem to catch on things often. Lowering the stone is out of the question.
I was just wondering if anybody has had any issues breaking stones, getting them caught on anything, or if it was such a problem that they ultimately had to alter the ring.

Is it really the diamond catching on something or the prongs? The diamond shouldn''t have anything to catch?

I agree, that doesn''t sound right. If hte stone can''t be lowered the I would make sure it''s fully insured so if it does chip, you can replace it. Can you post a picture of the actual ring?
