I can use all the advice I can get on this one. I have been lusting after and Eightstar diamond for a while now, and because I am after a 1.5 carat diamond at retail price, there is no way that I can afford it. So I decided to look on e-bay for a larger stone that I could have re-cut by Eightstar. I found a 2 carat diamond that will cost me 5,000.00 and the recutt will be about 3000.00 making the cost of the stone about 8000.00. I am hoping to end up with somewhere near 1.5 carats, but really no less than 1.25. Does anyone have any advice for me? What do you think? Any opinions or suggestions would help!

Hello!

I just ran a quick search from the main page using G-J colors and VS2-SI2 clarity and you have a lot of options in the size range you're looking for.

My suggestion would be to buy what you want from a trusted PS vendor and not go the recutting route.

Do you know how to search for different stones from the main page? If not, give us some color/clarity guidelines and we can help you.

There is someone on here that had a stone recut to and 8*. i''ll try and track down the thread. I would however suggest that you do not buy on ebay. You might talk to an 8* vendor about your idea and how to proceed and see what advice they can give you. Wink Jones at Winfields and both Bill Pearlman at Pearlmans Jewelers are both 8* dealers. I''d contact one or both of them.

i''ll post the thread of the recut here if i can find it.

not the thread i was looking for but this is a good on discussiong recutting stones to 8*''s

Have you ever heard the saying

''You can''t make a silk purse from a pigs ear'' (british saying)

Buying a large rock from Ebay and having it transformed into something wonderful is a bit optomistic.....and I think you are under-estimating the whole diamond selection/cutting process.

There are some serious experts on this site (I''m not one of them) but you need to be better informed prior to spending any $

a 5k 2ct wouldn''t likely have enough good material in it to make a 1.25 8*
A 2ct at 5k is going to be a mass of inclusions and likely not recuttable.

Oops -- my bad! I didn''t realize you were looking for an 8*. Sorry!

Recutting can involve a pretty complicated set of questions and most ebay ads don''t have anything like enough informamation to make this decision without looking at the subject stone. As I recall, the 8* people can offer you some guidance on finding an appropriate stone to recut, perhaps even finding it themselves as a portion of their services. Have you discussed your plans with them?

I have to say that I have done my research.... It is not that I am not informed, thank you very much.......I was simply looking for suggestions and ideas, as I have not yet spent my money!
