I''m a bit confused about this. Let''s say you select your diamond criteria and it''s on a level playing field for a "GIA" certified diamond. This is for a round brilliant.

Meaning you run your comparison where all things are the same...carat weight, color, clarity, cut, polish, symmetry, girdle thickness. Table and depth are within ideal proportions.

How come I''m noticing that some, more expensive diamonds don''t perform as well on the "Holloway Cut Adviser" v.s. "cheaper ones" that DO. Keep in mind I compared these diamonds on the same website.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone else noticed this?

I think the chart on the right here may be the biggest reason...

P.S. Leave poor Beethoven alone!

Define your definition of don''t perform as well on the ''Holloway Cut Adviser'' please.

Take these two diamonds for instance:

1) http://tinyurl.com/6k4htv : This one gets a 3.6 on the Holloway and is $5100

2) http://tinyurl.com/5k9ctw : This one gets a 1.4 on the Holloway and is $4300

---

Keep in mind, I''m new to all of this and trying to understand things better here. Why does #1 command such a higher price than #2?

strange I see no reason for the price difference.

BlueNile own very few diamonds. Most are listed by various companies and picked up electronically. So the prices are not always set by BN.

prices are jumping (falling) at present.
They use a term "ideal" which is misleading since both these stones are not ideal as they have not been graded by a lab that says so (generally accepted to be AGSL only).

The cheaper stone has very good proportions - the deeper one is a dog and will have a dead zone when you wear it.
GIA have a lousy cut grading system - to call that Excellent is misleading

are two threads and articles that explain how many millions of dollars led to a cut grading system that favours manufacturers and is bad for consumers

Thanks guys, appreciate your responses. I''ll check those links out Garry.
