Oh, my. My sister just informed me that my niece would like stud earrings for Christmas!

When I asked about color, she said: "Clear diamond like, dark blue sapphire like and black"

I'd like to spend around $200, and they have to be in my hands by next Tuesday. She's 18, petite (5'3, maybe 110) and is not a big jewelry person yet..but I can see where this might be the beginning of of a dangerous, slippery slope :Up_to_something:

At first, I was thinking diamonds, but I think i'd get more bling for the buck from colored stones.

Please help!!! Any advice is appreciated. :)

HI:

I posted a link in the colored stone thread about your ring request.

cheers--Sharon

My 19 year old wants diamond-like studs for Christmas and I got her nice sims. College is not a place for real diamonds, in my opinion. Crislu and Berricle are good sources of quality ones. If you want colored studs, you'll be able to get things like blue topaz or amethyst ones at places like Blue Nile. But even BN's sapphires are $600+ and probably not the best quality.

For Colored Gemstone earrings, I recommend this etsy vendor, JetFlair - https://www.etsy.com/shop/jetflair - I've only purchased her cabochon/bezel-style earrings, but I know if you do a PS search you'll find quite a few of satisfied PSers. Well-made and budget-friendly!

Agreed, I would opt to get colored stone earrings over diamond ones for this particular year.

Or, you could look in to getting her a pair of black diamond stud earrings?

Ooh Jen, what fun! I cannot wait till my nieces are of an age I can buy them nice jewelry. I would buy her a colored gemstone stud earrings vs diamond sims.

Here are some Blue Nile specials that might be worth checking out...

And here are a few from Ross Simons. They are also having a sale and free shipping. Some of these options are a bit over your budget but just in case...

Keep in mind these are not the best colored gems but since they are within your budget and your niece might love them anyway I included them. Personally I prefer sapphires that are not so dark.

Good luck and have fun choosing. Lucky niece!

Thanks all for the quick responses :)

@Sharon...thanks for the reminder. I've been away on a business trip (and sick to boot). Responded :)

@DS and Missy...Honestly, I wasn't thinking about Blue Nile...but they do have a decent pair of Blue Topaz earrings in the right price range (same ones you found, Missy...great minds think alike). And, they would be here in time for Christmas (a big bonus) Thoughts? http://www.bluenile.com/blue-topaz-white-topaz-halo-stud-earrings-sterling-silver_44888..... My only concern with these is size...wondering if they would be too big (8mm square).

@Missy, I think the other BN you found, while beautiful, are too light blue. I did like the black onyx Ross pair, but she's a white gold/sterling silver kinda gal. Although those, in white gold, with diamond halo jacket, would be pretty perfect!

@Mary. Her earrings are pretty, but my sister thought a jacket style like these would be more her style (a new piece of information!). http://www.africagems.com/topaz-earrings-650167.html.... I'd love to buy from africagems, since I know they are a PS favorite. But could they switch out the central stones (to something darker) in time? (they are closed today, grr!).

I found these darker sapphires on Multicolor, but don't think I could get them made in time for Christmas. :-(

She's heading into the hospital (Mayo) after Christmas for a week of tests (she's been battling a mystery illness for a year...seems like a combination of lupus and the worst migranes on records)...and I'd love to get her something sparkly to cheer her up for that week....so timing is important

Any help you could give is most appreciated!

I am so sorry to hear she is dealing with complex health issues Jen. I am sending her lots of good health vibes and PS dust for a good outcome.

Have you considered black onyx diamond studs? Those might be something she would enjoy... pretty and fits the bill.

ETA: OK just saw your comments re my first post. Got it. I will see if I can find anything else for you.

Thanks Missy for the healing dust. It's heartbreaking...she had to delay her freshman year (and scholarship) at DePaul because she literally can't read or drive and on a lot of days, can't function. She's run through the gamut at UofM doctors with no definitive diagnosis, so we're hopeful that Mayo can pin it down. And we know if Mayo can't, we've done everything we could. She had to be admitted last week for 3 days just to get the migraine pain under control (and she's not a complainer, at all...was a rockclimber, gymnast, you name it). I tear up every time I think of her going through this....so I want to make her Christmas special. Thanks for letting me vent a bit :(( I know you know how hard it is.....

Anyways, back to the bling.

I always assumed Ross Simons was more of a mall type jeweler with poorer quality. What are your thoughts? I know I may have to compromise due to timing, but I'd like to try and get her something really nice. I did like those onyx, but I need to find SS or WG...plus some diamonds would be nice. Although I like these too...wonder if they are a good price. http://www.ross-simons.com/products/840953.html?cc=&curr=

Thanks for doing some digging though, I really appreciate it.

Oh my heart goes out to her. I understand completely and it is heartbreaking. I hope and pray she will be OK and I am thinking of her and sending lots of healing dust and good wishes her way all season long till I hear from you that she is better.

Back to the bling. Re Ross Simons yes most of their jewelry is not good but I actually have a pair of earrings from them that I love and is good quality so you can get lucky. I would prefer Blue Nile for your niece because more of BN's stuff is better quality than Ross Simons but as I said you can get lucky.

I like the Blue Topaz earrings we both linked to from BN

not sure if they would be too big for her but I don't think so...

and I also like these but they are out of the budget by $100. I like the fact they are white gold vs silver. I don't love silver for my jewelry but your niece probably doesn't mind.

As for those RS black onyx earrings I actually had them included in my links to you but deleted it because it is double the budget. Not sure how the price is but I do think they are pretty for what they are.

I don't know your niece, and you do - but I think most halo styles are too fussy for most 19-year olds. I'd get a nice pair of .20ctw diamond studs from IDJ, or one or two pair of simple colored stone studs from someone like the etsy jeweler mentioned above.

I would go with gemstones -- I've been stalking this etsy shop's rose-cut gemstone studs for a while but haven't bought yet. They have black diamonds, sapphires, and others, and offer sterling and gold options (great for budget). Hope you are successful in brightening her day :))

I like the above suggestions and VR could be right that a halo is too fussy for a nineteen yo but again it probably depends on the 19 year old. Here is another suggestion. This pair is very pretty and in 18K white gold but perhaps not exactly what you were thinking of since the center stone is a lighter blue topaz but the halo is made of darker blue sapphire stones. And I think it is worth looking at since it is different than the usual stud earrings. Perhaps this is something that she might like?

I know you said colored stones but and I am usually not a tiffany "person" but these timy studs from tiffany are $150......sterling.

Thanks everyone....

Well, I sent my sister a bunch of links last night that were in this thread, and these are the final two contenders (they match some rings she's been buying...she likes Victorian era stuff, go figure!). Please let me know which 'option' you like better:

Option A (2 less expensive earrings)
http://www.bluenile.com/blue-topaz-stud-earrings-sterling-silver_44893?elem=img&track=product
http://www.bluenile.com/gray-moonstone-white-topaz-drop-earrings-silver_40681?elem=img&track=product

Option B (1 more expensive earring)
http://www.bluenile.com/blue-topaz-white-topaz-halo-stud-earrings-sterling-silver_44888?elem=img&track=product

Thanks :)

Pretty choices. Question is though would your niece prefer studs or dangling earrings? I prefer dangling earrings because I have long hair and the dangles show up better even when my hair is up off my face. I think once you decide which your niece would prefer the choice is easy. For studs I prefer your last (more expensive earrings) link.

Missy, my sister said she would love any of them. Interesting thought about the longer hair. Given that I have shoulder length, this never occurred to me. She has long, thick hair like you do (so jelly!), so dangilies would be good.

I sorta like getting her Option A, so she has both a dangily and stud option. But I admit, I like the stud in Option B more than I like the stud in Option A.

Jen, I just got this in my inbox and not sure you have it. With code RUDOLPH75 you receive $75 off your BN purchase of $150 or more but I don't think it applies to sale items. Just fyi in case you weren't aware of this discount.

Having a 19 year old myself, I think the 8mm blue topaz pair is not practical at all. That is a size I would wear, and it would be for dressy occasions with the halo.

I absolutely LOVE these:

The gray dangle ones are very pretty, too, but not everyday earrings, in my opinion. They'd be very nice for dress up, though!

I hope the trip to Mayo Clinic gives her the answers she needs to solve her problems. My daughter's roommate, also a freshman, is headed to Vanderbilt today with serious health issues as well. So sad for them to be dealing with serious health issues at a time in life that should be wonderful.

DS...that's what I was thinking too...the onyx studs would look a little 'old' for her. I like Option A so that she could have a dress up and a dress down pair.

OMG! Missy, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had no idea about the code...and it worked. I just bought my niece Option A and I and my budget are thrilled. Basically buy one, get one free. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

Jen

YAY! I am so happy it worked out for you! :appl: Please let us know how your niece likes the earrings and also that we are thinking good thoughts for her and sending good luck and healthy dust her way. I hope this is but a blip on her radar and that everything turns out well. (((Hugs))) to all of you.
