Hi everyone -

I dont know much about the diamond field and I would really appreciate any advice on what I should do.

Problem 1: I need to sell off a tiffany engagment ring I bought about 4 years ago.

Situation: I bought the tiffany ring about 4 years ago, I proposed to my then gf because I was about to move across the country for a medical residency for 6 years. The relationship ended on good terms due to the long distance/timing and she only wore the ring a day or two (she put the ring in the bank deposit box because she was leaving the country for 6 months). At the end - she gave me back the ring and its been sitting in the bank for the last few yrs. I bought the ring for $5670 and the insurance papers say its worth more. The ring is pristine and I have all documentation.

So my question is - what is the best way to sell it other than ebay? Are there reputable people/websites that buy back rings ? What should I be expecting in return? $5000? $3000?

Here is the specs on the diamond:

5.66-5.69x3.45mm
0.67 round brilliant
depth: 60.7
table: 56
girdle: med/fac
culet: none
polish/sym: good
VS2
G color
No fluorescence

I really dont want to just walk into any local shop w this ring in my hand - seems like they''d lowball me most likely. Any help would be appreciate it here.

Problem 2: I want to upgrade a blue nile engagement ring I bought last year.

Situation:
I met my present fiance in NYC 2 years ago and we''re getting married in Feb of 07 :) The problem is - I bought a new ring at blue niles because my friends were raving about how great/simple it was *shrug* . The clincher was that I was somehow under the impression that they had the 100% buyback upgrade policy (my big mistake). The point is, I bought a diamond that I would like to upgrade from a company that doesn''t upgrade. I am willing to double the purchase price but the problem is - I cant find any company that''d be willing to do that.

So my question is - Who can I turn to for an upgrade? I would like to retain a good percentage of the stone''s original value for the upgrade - what % should I be expecting ? 80% ? I mean, a diamond is a diamond - it shouldnt lose a lot of its value .. should it?

I really have no idea what to do at this point

Any solid advice/referral would be appreciated. Thank you all so much in advance.

i would have given you the same advice as Matatora. You also might checking with both GOG and Pearlmans about the Tiffany ring. Shop them all and see who can put the most money back in your pocket.

That really is a dilemma. You will lose money on both, more than likely. Several of the vendors who are listed on this site offer 100% value for upgrades bought from them. I would really recommend doing that the next time.

If you look on the Signed Pieces site, they have a couple of Tffany solitaires around the size of yours lsited. Some of them are being sold at around a 30% discount depending on the ring. You''d get less than that selling to Signed Pieces. Some of the people here have mentioned selling rings on another diamond website, but I am not sure where that is.

On second thought, I might encourage you to use the second stone for a pendant for your future bride since you are likely to take a big loss on that one.

I think you can up grade Tiffany rings once. ?

Reselling Gems & Jewelry- What can you expect?

The ring which is from Tiffany and Co will do a bit better since it is from Tiffanys and has the brand to back it up, you might try reselling it to Facets/Signed Pieces they carry used Tiffany''s.

For the second ring it is going to greatly depend on the cut of the diamond for who could help you ought, but I would suggest contacting Good Old Gold and Pearlman''s Jewelers.

Good Luck!
Thank you for the reply and the info! I just called Facets/Signed pieces and they quoted me $2400.. so I''d be losing about 50-60%

As for the 2nd ring - it is an ideal cut by GIA standards.

Like someone suggested, I think Im just going to hold off on upgrading (she insists she likes the 0.86 she has right now) - finish residency, make some $, buy her a new ring, and make that one into a pendant.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Now that sounds like a plan!!! The .86 will be perfect for a pendant, it is a nice stone, and has sentimental value since it is her original diamond. When you get finished with your residency, come back and we''ll be very happy to help you find the perfect diamond between 1.5-2.0 cts!

Haha - I hope that time will be soon! I have a ton of loans :T

But thank you all for the info and advice! I really appreciate it :)

oooh... I would just wait too until you finish your residency and can get her something REALLY big

hehe

what kind of doctor are you? I''m just finishing my 2nd year of med school- Step 1 is looming!

Does anyone know Tiffany''s upgrade policy?

You know, it would be worth the price of the phone call to them....

I think he could trade it in, but going to above 1.5 would cost such a premium that I don''t think it would be the wisest decision from a financial standpoint.
